Sounds like fun. As the owner of 14 or so German schuetzen rifles, I should attend. Maybe next year, I’ll be unavailable for the fall match.

Getting Germanic rifles to the range for people to salivate over and to have fun are two of the main goals of the German rifle fun targets. I hope you can make it some time.  I'll attach a couple of photos of Jeff Ehrlich's Aydt action engraving.  Darned cool, I'd say!

So far, there have been 2 recent events for German rifle shooters to try to generate interest in doing more of that at Beeson.  At the 2023 Spring CF shoot, everyone shot #3 targets at 100 yards, both offhand and from the bench.  Most shot original apertures with globe front sights, one shot click adjustable irons, one shot with a scope, one shot an original aperture with an original post and ears front, and one shooter's irons were of unknown configuration. At the 2023 Summer CF event (above) the same configurations were shot-with the exception that there was no gun with all original configuration sights. Another difference was that one shooter shot a scoped Aydt on a #3 target at 200 yards for 10 shot score and 5 shot group. None of these targets so far have been shot offhand in a traditional configuration at a target of the proper size for the chosen distance. I'm not sure the text will fit in this post, so I'm going to post another message with a clip from an email thread where some ASSRA members with Germanic rifles have been discussing what targets they'd like to shoot and what the rules should look like.  Let us know what your interests are.
Thanks.

Sorry for my clumsiness with the computer.  I thought I had copied the traditional German rules, but don't see them in the previous post.

2008 TRADITIONAL GERMAN RIFLE RULES
Many central European Schuetzen rifles now reside in the Unites States. Although cartridge cases, bullet moulds and sights are now much more available than in the past, these rifles are largely curiosity pieces and more likely found in the closet rather than the shooting range. The intent of the traditional German rifle match is to perpetuate the spirit and techniques of the Schuetzen matches as shot in continental Europe prior to 1940 and to share loading techniques to enable these rifles to shoot to their potential. In all phases of this match, competitors are encouraged to use equipment and techniques consistent with the original matches.

Rifles

This match is limited to single shot German or central European Schuetzen rifles made prior to 1940. Only falling block or swinging block rifles such as the Martini, Aydt and other variations of these actions are allowed. No bolt action rifles will be allowed. Cartridges are limited to traditional European Schuetzen chamberings such as the 8.15 X 46R, 22 RF and some 9.3’s. Original unaltered rifles are strongly encouraged and any modifications or replacements must be consistent with the original configuration. Consistent with popular opinion among early European shooters, no palm rest or finger rest will be allowed.

Sights

Iron sights only. Since many of these rifles were brought to the United States without sights, replacement sights will frequently be required on these rifles. Since several vendors can furnish faithful rear sights and they help characterize the essence of the German Schuetzen rifle, rear sights not consistent with the original configuration will not be allowed. Faithful front sight replacements are much harder to find and fit so more latitude will be given and replacements such as a Lyman 17A will be allowed. No Redfield international or similar sights will be allowed. The shooter is responsible for maintaining as close to an original rifle configuration as possible.

Course of Fire

Twenty shots offhand using the 25 ring target at 200 yards.

On items not covered in these rules, ISSA open class and traditional class rules will be in effect.

And, finally, some discussion about original vs traditional regarding the guns themselves...

Are scopes allowed with the German rifle match? Subject: Fwd: ASSRA GERMAN TARGETS, 2003 SPRING CF: TO PARTICIPANTS CAUTION: This email originated from outside

Good question, Roger. I'm not sure I have a good answer.

I'd like anyone with a German to come and shoot it and let others see it.  It would make sense to me to have open and traditional classes like we do with American guns and put guns that have an advantage over a traditional configuration in the open class.  (36 X Sightrons anyone?) The practical limitations of the availability of iron sights is-I think-handled well in the ISSA traditional rules for Germans that I will post following.  I'd love input from others on how to handle the details.  For example, "original" and "traditional" are two different things.  Unless I'm mistaken, I think defining traditional rifles as only in original condition would result in an impractically small pool of potential shooters.  For example, ISSA rules compromise on iron sights by allowing Lyman 17s in the traditional class and I think we should do the same.  I think we'd agree that click sights are an advantage over traditional German sights, so I don't think their use should qualify a rifle as traditional, but I'd also be open to "irons are irons" and "scopes are scopes" categories. Since I just bid on a German which had been drilled and tapped (UGH!), I'd like to bring up "traditional" vs "original" again.  In my mind, doing that to an original rifle is a shame, but not a crime.  I believe that if those holes are not being used to actually mount a scope they should not disqualify a German as traditional as long as it still qualifies in all other respects-even though it's no longer original. Those of us shopping for Germans these days often have to accept whatever transgressions previous owners made do with to shoot their guns.

Let's keep bringing and shooting Germans in whatever configurations we have for now, see how many targets are actually being shot, and refine the rules once we have a better idea of what most folks want to do.

A clarification...
I think rifles that don't fit whatever definition of Traditional that we agree on would shoot in something called a "Fun Target" category, rather than an "Open Class" if that matters to anyone.

Mike,
14 Germans is quite a stable of schuetzens-we hope you can make it to Beeson at some point!  With that many, I'm wondering what experience you have in disassembly and reassembly.  A step by step posted on the forum with photos or a video would sure be useful for those-like me-that have just purchased their first System 1 Aydt, for example.  The only useful specific instructions I've been able to find in all my searches of "the internet" essentially boil down to "push the button on the right side of the action to release the takedown lever, rotate the takedown lever, remove it and drop out the internals.  Pay attention to how you remove things so you can put them back together."  Not very helpful for a guy like me that is way better at taking things apart than he is putting them back together.  Do you (or anyone else) know a  source that includes photos and/or diagrams and/or a video of both processes?

I should clarify that. I did own an Aydt, it came in a 2 rifle deal. It was the other rifle I wanted. The Aydt was junk, I disassembled it and sold off the parts. I still have the action, lever, and extractor.

Where is this match? Any dates for next year?

I also bring 5 or 6 German Schützens to the Columbia Schützenverein shoots each time, and some other participants have them as well.

We're shooting these fun targets at the Beeson Range outside of Etna Green, IN.  They may be shot at any of the 7 scheduled matches of the season.
