I had one of those tip-ups but sold it this spring. It was a #8 also and like yours, had the plainer trigger guard. It had that 12-1/2" LOP. It was a 32/40. I must say that I really like the short LOP. About 20 years ago I was working for an outfit where we made re-pops of several old time single shots and restored originals. I was suprised to find an original Win. 1885 schuetzen with a Helm butt-plate also had a 12-1/2 LOP. It fit me so nice I made a re-pop for myself and used that LOP. They seem to balance better even tho I am 6'.

My tip-up:

I actually have three Tip-up rifles. Two have the 12 1/2 length. The other is 13 1/4”.

I prefer the shorter stock off hand, but it’s tough on the table for me to get comfortable.

It’s not like I’m a great shot off hand, but it is more comfortable.

Well, well, well, my # 5 tip-up with a small Swiss buttplate, Pope-reworked from .22 RF to .32 Ideal, also has a 12-1/2" LOP.  (And I'm another 6-footer who doesn't find that uncomfortable.)  Shall we assume that 12-1/2" was that standard LOP for Stevens tip-ups in all grades?

I looked again through most of the literature that I have, Grant, a couple catalog reprints and DeHaas, nothing I could find listed stock lengths for the Tip-up rifles. There were standards formthe Ideal series which was 13 when mentioned. Not all models listed length of pull.

Sounds like I pulled 13” as standard out of somewhere.

The one I have that is longer is the Range model 9/10.

I thought I had seen a table showing length of pull available, but now question that.

Nice sight!

Seems like 12 1/2 was probably the standard length based on a sample of about 10.

always something new to learn.

My opinion, they were made to be shot offhand. Hence the short LOP and drop on the stock. They'd be terrible in prone/Creedmoor, and benchrest wasn't really a thing back then AFAIK.

Look at the current state of the art in International rifles. Theres a noticeable difference between air rifle and smallbore with regard to the buttstock geometry. Smallbore is shot 3 positions, standing, kneeling, and prone. Air rifle is standing only.

I agree, maybe a little harder or awkward on the bench, but I think shooting a 3” group regularly is certainly within the rifles ability. I certainly enjoy shooting mine.

How is that stock working out?
Has some interesting angles.

Unfortunately, I never shot a single round last winter. I had a full hip put in in December and have had complications ever since. On top of that, a buddy broke the final drive on my dozer so I had no way to keep the range clear. I probably would have shot on crutches if I could get down to put targets up. It was a very depressing winter.

That’s no good to hear, hope it’s better now.
Maybe a nice heavy duty tripod setup that will support both you and the rifle?

Also real easy to shoot the Schuetzen style butt stocks
