A good day on the range with “readable” wind....at least sometimes. We shot the offhand as any sight, with no separate
iron offhand to allow ample time for the Buffalo match in the afternoon.  This hasn't been held for nearly 20 years, but was
           always popular with the participants.
The buffalo hunt is a combination of shooting cardboard buffs at various ranges, and then steel “hostiles”.  Rifles are Class II
with fixed ammo. We hope to have another next fall.

It's a hoot! What the course of fire doesn't show is that the buffalo, close hostiles, and chief are at unknown ranges. The far hostiles are on top of our 200 yard berm. 40 caliber or better, iron sights, no sighter shots, and no rangefinders. Cross sticks for the buffalo only. Prone or sitting is allowed. Get a 100 and 200 yard setting and hold under or over if you want to keep the time down. Sight adjustments add penalty points because of the extra time used. You do have a spotter that's supposed to be helping. Undecided

My belt-fed Ballard (Grin) served me well. Right at 4 shots per minute. Shocked

The Buffalo Hunt reads like great fun. Curious to know if there were any leading problems due to the rapid firing.

Thanks Keith! The difference after cataract surgery is nothing short of amazing. I still manage to blow a few shots second-guessing myself. Grin

It definitely is fun! I can't wait until the fall when we can shoot again. The grass is already brown and dry at the range (one week later) so we don't dare shoot anywhere except into our 200 yard berm. Fires in this area can be devastating.

I can't speak for anyone else but I had no leading at all. I believe that the Javelina Lube (50/50, not the 75/25 Javelina Schuetzen Lube) I use is why I had no leading.

That buffalo shoot does sound like great fun! Too bad you can't shoot it more often!

We decided to start having "The Buffalo Hunt" again knowing it was late in the season. We thought we might get in one more "Hunt" before it got dry, but no luck. We'll start again in early spring of next year and should have at least three months to hunt buffs.

The hostiles and the chief are man size?

How big are the buffs?

The buffalos are 24" high, hump to hoofs, and 37 1/2" long, head to tail.

The hostiles are steel plates that need to be knocked down. They measure 10" wide by 14" tall. That sounds pretty big, but isn't when you're shooting as fast as you can.

The chief is cardboard and any hit on him counts. I believe he's about 40" by 20".

The 10 point area of the buffs is about half their actual size.

You could take lots of time and clear all the targets with 16 shots. However, the time penalty will put you in last place. The idea is to simulate a buffalo hunt and Indian attack. Shoot fast!

In northern Europe they have speed matches where two shooters are pitted against one another firing at multiple targets at various distances; first to hit all the targets is the winner. Time is first and foremost in the shooters minds next to the bullet hitting the target. No timers are needed nor computations, just good shooting. It is a great spectator sport as well and could easily be adapted to any type rifle, single shots included.

That sounds like fun too. Maybe we could do a 100 yard 22 rimfire version at our once-a-year 22 rimfire match.

Having fun is what it's all about, right? We don't have to try and shoot 250 targets all the time, eh?  Undecided
