Boneheads like this crack me up. Lots of destruction coming out of both ends of such a rifle. Of course a man has two sets of spheroids, his huevos and his eyeballs. This chap is dealing with reproductive spheroids and ignoring the eyeball. As an ex-boxer amateur only, I can tell you that a detached retina is the front porch and door to blindness. A lot of African PH’s suffered from this condition. Big rifles kick hard but mostly the recoil is faster and more destructive.

Indeed
Anyone who tries to tell you that the recoil of one of these big bore rifles is just a big push, has never shot one.
With service loads, they come back hard, and they come back fast.

Old anecdote about the English in Africa hunting with 4 bores:
The Englishman fires.
The elephant goes down.
The Englishman goes down.
Whoever gets up first is the winner.
If neither one gets up the native bearers divide the spoils and go home.

Am I right in remembering that Frederick Courtney Selous literally nearly took his head off when out of direst necessity he fired both barrels of his 4 bore at once?

I think it was a double load by his gun bearer in a single shot muzzle loader.

Is this why he invented the Selous plates?

It came from the ML days when hunting elephants for ivory.
If the elephant was coming for you, your first shot could be your last shot - ever.

Well if a 4 bore rifle isn’t large enough I guess a 2 bore rifle would be better.

Then there are the 600 and 700 nitro. I once had the pleasure of shooting a 475no.2, and decided that was enough for me.

I’ve always been curious and game to light off the bigger cartridges. About five years ago I was hanging out with some safari types at a range in CT. I had a chance to fire three 458 WW mags and they were stiff but I thought manageable. But later in the day a guy showed up with a 460 Weatherby. Two rounds and I was certainly stepping over the line. That one hell of a serious cartridge but then I’ve never been behind any of the big African cordite monsters.

I dare say any professional hunter worth his salt would not be caught using such a cannon. The good ones know it’s all about shot placement and bullet construction. There used to be a fellow using a similar big bore and was busting down water buffaloes at close range all the while appearing to be as gallant as a Spanish bull fighter. Last I heard this guy was trampled to death by a wounded buff; missed the mark and paid the price. Big in itself is not the only requirement to a proper hunting rifle, rather a rifle that gives the hunter his best shot.
