Local store has a Ruger #1 in 6mm PPC. The barrel is a Ruger barrel. I've never heard of the cartridge. What is it good for? Can it be rechambered for a better round?

Better for what? Wiki says: The 6mm PPC (Palmisano & Pindel Cartridge), or 6 PPC as it is more often called, is a centerfire rifle cartridge used almost exclusively for benchrest shooting. It is one of the most accurate cartridges available at distances of up to 300 meters. This cartridge's accuracy is produced by a combination of its stout posture, being only 1.22 in. long, and aggressive shoulder angle of 30 degrees. Its primary use has been benchrest shooting matches since the 1980s.
The cartridge is a necked-up version of the .22 PPC which is in turn based on a .220 Russian (5.6×39mm). The standard bullet diameter for 6mm cartridges is .243 inches (6.2 mm), the same diameter used in the .243 Winchester and 6mm Remington cartridges. To obtain maximum accuracy, bullet weight and form are matched to the rifling twist rate of the barrel. Typically, 68 gr. bullets are used in barrels with twist rates of 1 in 13 inch, while 1 in 15 in. barrel twists can accommodate lighter 58 or 60 gr. accurately. The cartridge developed enough acceptance that rifles chambered for it are available commercially. Lapua, Norma and Sako make 6mm PPC brass.
Twist would probably be too slow for rechambering to 243 Win.

Thank you. The rifle is in the white with needs to be finished wood.
I've not yet seen it. A friend called to ask me about it. $700 is what is being asked for the rifle. Sounds like a deal to me, if you like the cartridge. Ought to make a screaming Varmint rifle. No bench rest shooting here.

I have a Ruger #3 I rebarrelled in 6mm PPC for a varmint rifle.  It is very accurate.  The only concern I had with it was I would soon kill all the ground squirrels in an area and would have to move.

Perhaps you should move before you do, that way there will be more the next time you go. We all should have learned from the Bison and passenger pigeon slaughter.

Actually I'm only culling out the dumber squirrels that haven't figured out that when they hear shooting to stay underground.

So actually I'm contributing to the improvement of the species.
