I agree with chipmaker.  A 40 ton press would work much better.  The arbor press, even with the arm extender, was marginal.  BTW, after using the die & press method, a primer pocket reamer may be necessary to restore the pocket diameter.

I was able to use my bench vise and after a  couple of squeeze cycles can increase the rim thickness by the 5 mils that I need. A squeeze cycle is 3 hard turns of the vise handle where I turn the case a third of a turn. If I am careful there are no other changes to the case. I use a gauge pin slipped into the  ase mouth. It sticks out only about 1/8"

That's an innovative technique for someone without a press.  I would have never thought about using a vice.  I'll have to try it - may even work better than the arbor press.

If you go to the Buffalo Arms website and look at reformed brass for original Sharps cartridges like the 40-50 and look at the pictures that is what they are doing to increase the rim thickness for original Sharps chambers that need a thicker rim

Gentlemen,
I use the machine vise on my mill. I take the handle off and use a torque wrench and a socket to tighten the vise to the same ft. Lbs. each time. Reforming is very accurate that way. I found too much pressure can make the primer pockets loose. I need .080 rim thickness for my Sharps Creedmoor.

Tom

I thought about using my mill vise and I will now and using your torque wrench idea. Thanks!

Yup, the base & rim looks like the photo I posted earlier using the die and press.

Here's my process for increasing the rim thickness after others have suggested the use of a mill vise and torque wrench. Thanks!
This is a Kurt 6" vise and I use a torque wrench set to 55 ft-lbs and this reliably increases the rim thickness by 0.005" in just one pass. The cases are virtually unchanged in other areas. I do check the primer pocket depth and maybe something like 0.5 mils is all that I cut out.
This is a pretty fast process now and gives one the ability to virtually go to 0 headspace if desired. Smiley

I have also found that if I increase the rim thickness too much that I can use the rim thickness measure sleeve I show to force the rim back. This is with the same vise and with the torque wrench set to a lower setting.
