Ron Snover Highwall 45/90 barrel. What Application

I have a chance to buy a cut rifled barrel made by Ron Snover in 1995.  I'm sure Ron made it because I sold it for Ron years ago. I was offered it back unused.  It is a 34" long barrel that has been fitted to a Highwall but unfired. It weighs 8.5 pounds.  My question is what game would it be useful for today?  It's too heavy for hunting. Are target barrels that heavy?  What do BPCR barrels weigh?  Are there big bore bench matches?  I even have a thickside action that I could use.

34" is too long for silhouette as it has an offhand stage unless the barrel is quite light.  A 34" .45-90 is good for Black Powder Target Rifle matches, both mid and long range.

It's best use, depending on twist, as flatlander said would be for long range gong matches that don't have a weight limit.

If the barrel is too heavy for you, I'd trade you for a lighter real nice .45-90 barrel blank (18 twist) half octagon specifically cut for a good BPCR or Silhouette rifle.  I'd like to build a heavy rolling block or Hepburn, and this barrel would work great.

Sounds like a good black powder target rifle.  My target rifles are 1:18 & 1:16 twist.  Heavy is good to a point.  14 and up pounds makes for nice shooting.  I'd use it for long range target rifle (800/900/1000 yard), midrange ( 200/300/500/600).  Some might consider it a bit overkill for midrange but I watched Rick Moritz clean our clocks with one when the wind got tricky at 600 and my 40-65 just couldn't keep up.

As mentioned, it'd also be great for gong shoots.

Chris,

You got to watch out for that Moritz guy. He started coming to the matches in Tacoma and began kicking out butts.  I just invited him to the Stars and Stripes summer ISSA matches.  What was I thinking!!!

He's a really nice guy.  One of the most talented shooters I've met too.

And his wife can outshoot most of us. After 50 or 60 rounds of 45-90 with a huge chunk of lead you'd wish your rifle weighed twice as much;-)

The Quigley comes to mind.  It's a a sort-of throwback to the German Schuetzenfest Matches and the modern era ASSRA/ISSA sport.

Rule Book:  Be safe, have fun.
