Lyman 3117 Bullet Mould
Mar 13th, 2023 at 8:20pm
Print Post
Cartridges Of The World mentions a Lyman 3117 bullet mould. I know it's an obsolete mould but I would like to know/see what it looks like. Measurements would be nice also. My Lyman Cast Bullet books don't list it and my internet searches haven't turned up anything.

Anyone have any info at all?

Interesting bullet for the 32-35 Stevens and Maynard. 153 grains.

Thanks Joe! That's the one. Does it list the length anywhere?

No, I didn't see a length. I shoot a very similar bullet in my Maynard 32-20 and it measures about .850 in length.

Frank Elliot used to shoot a 32-35. He might know all about it.

Thanks Joe. What's the twist on your barrel and what does your bullet weigh? I'll try and contact Frank also.

The twist is 16 and the groove dia is .317.  Maynard was way ahead of Paul Shuttleworth.....
If I remember right , they weigh 157.

Mine and Val's friend Bob down in Colton Oregon has this mold and he cherish is it. Way back when probably in the sixties he sent a mold back to Lyman that was faulty and they didn't have a replacement. In the letter Lyle Kilborn (working for lyman at the time)recommended this mold and sent it  to him.

From the Stevens catalog.

I just got a mould for my 32-35 last week. 1.050” long, 185 grains in 1/25. Diameter is .316” for a .315” groove. Shows potential with 1/16 twist and cull bullets forming brass.

The 3117 I have is at the end of an Ideal #6 reloading tool for the .32-35 Stevens, so marked.  By my calipers, the cavity looks to be 0.950” long.

I shot up the bullets I cast from it a long time back, so I can’t measure one; however it sized to 0.311” without effort.  Casting with one of those Ideal tools requires a fairly high tolerance of pain.

The SAECO #630 though lighter with less bands it is very similar in nose shape when I sat them side by side. This is a 20 year ago memory but it was like the 630 was inspired by the 3117.
It is an often underappreciated Is plainbase 30 caliber.

Accurate molds 31-150 A thru D are also very similar in design to the ideal 3117. I have an Ideal 308241 154 round nose mold, that I am going to try with my 44 1/2 .32-35 project when finished. As cast the bullets are .312” and .860” long.

What length/ Dia are you looking for Jerry?
The ideal 311264 looks to be very similar. I just acquired one.
