RCBS COWBOY dies

Besides the obvious difference in appearance and finish are these dies any different than a standard FL set of 3 dies?

What I've seen from the sets I have is the expanders and the seaters are set up for our bigger cast bullets. But then again a friend of mine has a set that is exactly the same dimension as the non cowboy so maybe I just got lucky on the 3 I have.

I have a few sets.  The differences are:
1. anodized so they look nice.
2. knurled lock rings rather than 6 sided nut.  This is a negative to me.
3. mine have all come with 2 sizes of expander.

Knowing what I know now, I'd buy standard RCBS dies and get custom expanders from Buffalo Arms to suit the bullets I use.

The anodizing is nice though.

Chris.

I have a set and they work good. I always wear a cowboy hat when I use mine.
Seldom do I make fixed ammo with mine. Anodized? I thought they were hardened in colors. When I need a proper size expander plug I make one on the lathe.

They aren’t aluminum, so they aren’t anodized.  Mine are steel finished in black oxide, aka blued.  As near as I can tell the only difference between them and a standard set of dies is the finish, the knurled lock ring, and an extra $10 on the price tag.

Interesting.  I assumed that they were anodized.  There is some sort of coating, but I guess I don't know what it is.

I don't think there is any advantage over them except they look nice.

I was told the Cowboy dies full length size the cases a bit more for them to slide into lever action chambers more easily.

Do they crimp the bullets better to prevent movement of bullets in the tube magazines?

Is that true?

RCBS states: "RCBS Cowboy Dies are built to slightly different dimensions than our regular dies to allow optimum sizing expanding, seating and crimping needed to load great lead bullet ammo for Cowboy Action shooters of lever-action rifles, cowboy shotguns and single-action revolvers. Comes with a shell holder!"

Interesting.  I don't really crimp anything, except fr my 45-70 lever action and to he honest I use my plain RCBS dies for that one.  None of my RCBS Cowboy dies have ever come with a shell holder.  I must have gotten ripped off Smiley.

I just looked through my collection.  I have them in 32-40, 38-55, 40-65, and 45-70.  They are nice looking and definitely size cases.  I don't know if I've ever used the seaters in most of them.

Chris.
