Ballard Tang Sight

Hello,
I am sure this has been discussed, but I have searched with no luck. I have a Red Willow Ballard Pacific #5 in 40-65, shooting a 400 grain bullet and 60 grains of black powder right now.  I am looking to purchase a suitable Soule type tang sight.  People who have a Ballard in 40-65 or similar round, what is the usable maximum range of a Mid-Range Soule like the MVA with 189 Minutes of elevation or a Kelley with 175 minutes. Also trying to figure out how much of the sight staff will be used up sighted in at 100 yards and an average globe front sight around ½” high

Thanks
Lee

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I don't have an MVA on any of my Ballard rifles, but really doesn't matter what model of rifle it is. Barrel length will change how far you can shoot as a shorter barrel will actually allow more elevation with the shorter sighting radius. But I use long range on anything I shoot over 650 yds. with.

I knew I would forget something important. The barrel is 30" from crown to breech face.

Mine are all 30"-34" in my .40-65's. I'd still go with the long range. Would be a shame to be at the top of your staff, and not quite make it.

Very few people will wish for a shorter sight, but a lot more folks wish that they had bought a longer sight.

I was kinda figuring that long range is the way to go. I'm not in a rush right now and have been hoping one comes up second hand. I just didn't want to find a good price on a mid range one and find out it won't do what I want it to.
