Any Reviews of the Hi-Lux "Short" Malcolm 6X Scope

Truth be told, I would love to get an MVA Winchester B5 scope, but my budget just won't allow for that...

Does anyone have any experience with the Hi-Lux "Short" 6X Malcolm scopes?

I've read some reports that the bases aren't finished as well as the rest of the scope, but haven't seen much on the optics or the performance of these "short" scopes -- while there are some posts about the "long" scopes on this site.

I think this scope -- or a more expensive MVA! -- would look great on a Uberti Low Wall 22LR with DST that will be coming my way soon.

Thanks for your help.

(Yes, the image below does shows the MVA B5 scope...)

I do.
It's a decent scope, cross hairs a bit thick for target work, ok for sillhouette and hunting.
Problem is by the time you get put a decent set of mounts  on it, you're right back into or above an MVA B5.

Had one, sold it - mounts are junk.  If you have to have an 'A5', just wait and save up for a MVA with the No2  mounts.

Thanks all, I appreciate the candid feedback.

I do have an old vintage A5 from my dad that I need to repair the crosshairs on; once I do that, I'll have the Low Wall D&Td for that (7.2" on center). I'll start off with that one, and see what I save/sell off towards an MVA later.

Wow, OUTSTANDING Info * -- thank you!!!

* Just like all of the other info I've ever seen you write about -- well done sir!

I read it, but for sure will need to reread it again (and then again, after the rifle comes here and I check my budget).

I have a Hi-Lux "Short" 6X Malcolm scope that was on a rifle I purchased. Would not recommend it. Mounts are soft, scope is not very clear. In all fairness, however, the rear mount was damaged in shipment and had to be replaced. Perhaps the scope may have suffered some unseen damage as well.

The MVA Winchester, the DZ arms scope and the Unertl small game scopes all would look good on the LW. Best bet would be to keep your eye on the various forums as things often pop up for sale. There was a small game scope on here a little while back.
The MVA is a nice scope, I have one but haven't mounted it yet as i need to get some blocks for it one of these days. The Unertl and other brands of small game scopes are quite nice as well. Sometimes you can find a scope a bit rough on the outside but still very good on the inside. I did that recently with a 1 1/2" Unertl target. It didn't have caps and a few kind of nasty rust spots but slowly its cleaning up. It will never be like new but will be a very good serviceable scope. As a bonus, it has fine wires and a dot. Just keep your eyes open never know what you will run across.

Thanks for all the feedback above.

I got a smokin' deal on a "mint" Unertl scope in 10X that's 20" long (Unertl 1+1/4" Varmint model), which looks like it was not used much, if at all.  Maybe it won't be as "vintage" looking as the 5X MVA Malcolm scope, but it will sure help at the range.

With my floaters and pending cataract surgery, I just can't see that well from a 5X 3/4" scope (as I had the chance to check a couple out at the range).  I read some info online about Fecker Scopes, per an old ad, and they said that with the larger eye piece and objective lens (like the 10X Unertl will have), the amount of light getting to the shooter's eye was 2.2X -- quite an increase in brightness, plus the 2X power increase.

One of the scope refurbishing companies confirmed that Fecker info, and the manager there also said "No matter how good the glass... There's no way to get the scope image brightness level we are accustomed to when using a straight 3/4" scope tube."

Cheers.

Isn't the rear (adjustment) mount backwards?

Must of been used by a left handed shooter.

I have the Hi-Lux 6x short, bought it for the same reason , cost. I lucked out and was able to get a set of MVA mounts for a steal. I am happy with the results I am getting.
