Special Shiloh Sharps

A friend of mine was talking about a Shiloh he got from Bill Bagwell and I mentioned that he helped me a lot when I got my first .45-110 several years ago. Bill and I spoke on the phone for many an hour on several occasions. Even though I never met him personally he invited me to come stay at his house and we would get it shooting on his range. I never did take him up on the invite and I do regret it. I told my friend if he ever sold that gun I wanted first dibs. He then told me he knew where one of Bill's guns was available for sale. He put me in touch with Bill’s widow Sidra. I gave her a call and she sent some pictures of the rifle. I told her I would buy it before she sent the pictures. It came with a lot of brass, Bill’s cartridge belt (it is way too big for me), a bullet mold, a Parts Unknown soule sight and one of Bill’s copper penny front sights and a Walter Cooper pewter tip. It means a lot to me to have a gun that not only belonged to Bill but one he used. This one will stay with me.

Beautiful gun and even better story to go with it.  I only hope that someday when I am gone that my guns are with those who appreciate them as I did.

Best regards,

-Ron

The Hank Williams Jr rifle was a 14 pound bull barrel
gun. Willford Brimley used it in the Tom Selleck movie “Crossfire Trail”.
Yes, quite a story, I was told by Robert Bryan that Hank ordered it and when he went to pick the rifle up at Shiloh,
the gun did not weigh exactly 14 pounds. Hank threw a fit and Bob threw Hank out of the shop!

No that's the 40-70 that dealt him fits getting it to shoot. He actually talked quite a bit about having it rebarreled to 44-77, until he finally found the sweet spot.

Yes, Bill and I had a lot of discussions about the .40-70. The .Shiloh .40-70 was my first Shiloh and it never gave me any problems getting it to shoot well. I used it at Alliance and the Quigley for several years.
I sure miss him.
This picture was a good day.

That is a fine looking shooter P-C enjoy it.

Think it finally came around consistently for him when he got ahold of the Jamison brass. When he got that thing to running the way he wanted it would be hard to figure out which was his favorite rifle, either this one or that 20 twist gun with the borchardt chamber.
Miss his phone calls.

Don,
I think a lot of us feel this way.
I never heard a foul work from him during our time in person or on the phone.

Well maybe once LOL, when I talked him into shooting Calamity, my .50/2.5 with a 720 grain bullet that split his lip and I told him, I said shoot it not kiss it.  Grin

Two years ago on tomorrow, 2/17/21, Bill "The Rdneck" Bagwell left us. Like so many I miss his call and stories.

Bill was a character for sure. He was very generous with his time. He didn’t know me from Adam when he first told me to call him. He helped me tremendously with several rifles. I must say when I called Sidra she was the same way. We talked for a long time about Bill, shooting and families. Bill was a wealth of knowledge and the BP shooting world and the world in general is poorer for his passing

Bill was certainly a character.

My first ordered Shiloh was an LRE in 45-100 (2.6" case).  I hope to pick up my new one, a Model 1877 in 38-55 on the way to Quigley in June.  I was smarter on this one, Cecil Friede (sp?) sold me a $900 blank.

The most unique one I have was ordered with a paper patch chamber in 45-70.  I had never heard that Shiloh offered that option. The gentleman who ordered it was a machinist/tool & die maker, and he made a mould to fit it.  He only used it for hunting, and only used black powder in it.  You could never tell it had ever been fired from looking down the bore.

Congratulations,

Rich

I was at the Wanemacher gun show in Tulsa this weekend and saw a Shiloh sharps with the exact same forearm and pewter tip on it, it was a black powder sharps made in NY before they moved to Montana, that squared off pewter tip is what initially caught my eye.
