Don't see this everyday

Print Post
I was at a decoy show this weekend and spotted a full unopened can of King's Semi Smokeless powder. I have often read about guys using this back in the early 1900's to shoot single shots but never saw a can of it before now, let alone a full can.
Hope you enjoy. (I did not buy it)

Much as I'd love to have some and experiment with it, I'd be afraid of that can.

Years ago, I read about King's Semi-Smokeless in Phil Sharpe's "Complete Guide to Handloading".  Back in 1937, he said the stuff was unstable, that the nitroglycerine component tended to separate and concentrate.  He suggested "walking to the nearest storm drain and gently pouring the stuff in".

Did the seller bring a potential bomb to the gun show?

Rumor has it that this or Le'smoke is about the burn rate of 5744.  Hodgdon brought it out, iirc, to provide a pressure and loading density for those who do not wish to use the "Unholy Black" any more.

just a thought, but I'd have negotiated on the can, just to have it on a shelf with my other weird stuff.

King's Semi-Smokeless first appeared in 1896 or 1897.  Lesmoke appeared about 1910.  Both were first developed for use with .22 rimfires used in indoor Schuetzen competition.  Their use as powders for reloading came later.
