Remington #2 38-40
Feb 4th, 2023 at 4:13pm
Print Post
I am looking at a Remington #2 that is chambered in 38-40. Can anyone tell me if smokeless loads would be safe to shoot in this rifle? From what I can remember 38-40 would be one of the larger cartridges chambered in the #2 action, but presumably those were black powder rounds. Is there enough barrel shank and will the action stand up to the breach thrust of mild smokeless loads?

Many thanks,
Frosty

It should be fine with mild smokeless loads. #2s were made well into the smokeless era. From my research, it seems the WCF chamberings were most common in late production rifles. It is not a common chambering.

Good luck on your search.  Original centerfire #2s are quite uncommon. If Remington chambered that caliber it will be somewhat pricy as well.
If you just want a #2 in that caliber to shoot, you will arrive at your destination much faster starting with a heavy barrel .32 rimfire. Have the barrel bored and rifled for the 38-40, then convert the breech block to centerfire.  I would stick to the mild cowboy shoot loads.

Thanks all for the replies. If they are that rare, I have a feeling the price may be higher than I am willing to pay. Never know, may be I'll get lucky.

If you pass on it, I'd appreciate hearing where it is. I may be interested. Thanks Steve

I have a #2 in 38-40 as well as two 1-1/2s in 38-40.  They are marked "38W".  Use the Alliant pressure tested loads using Reloader 7 and you won't have trouble.  I have a pdf of the Alliant manual if you want a copy.
I have a #2 in 38-40 Remington also but would have to go look at the barrel marking.

Jack - I have an Alliant manual, but it does not have rifle loads for the old cartridges like .38-40, .44-40.  It just has cowboy revolver loads. Does yours have these?  I will say that I use a lot of Reloader 7 in pistol size rifle cartridges with great success.  .25 Stevens, .32 extra long, .32-20, .44-40 all shoot very well with it.  A capacity load closely matches original black powder loads.

In the last decade the #2 Rolling Blocks have really gone a bit nuts price wise, and the only ones I see cheap are either well used up, or .32 RF versions. The .22RF and any CF versions are usually way more than I'd ever want to pay. I have one in .22 Long, and another in .32-20 that was described wrong and sold cheap at an auction, so I was able to get it.

12.7gr of RL7 with the Lyman/Ideal 311008 bullet shoots better than my aging eyes can see.

See if this works. I use RL7 exclusively in all my 38-40s.  I have a 50yd wallet group that a friend watched me shoot through his spotting scope.  It is only 3 shots.  He asked me if I wanted one to hang on the wall or keep shooting.  I looked through the scope and the target hangs on the wall.  I did shoot several more groups that day and a couple of those hang nearby.  My bullets are 40043 and 401258.

I have a #2 that was a 32 RF and was in rough shape. I relined it and chambered in 32 H&R mag. Reworked the firing pin hole/breech face to CF. I load it lite though I am sure it would be fine with full loads. it shoots well and looks nice. Fun little rifle. Smiley
