The rifle is coming up at an auction at the end of the month in Ontario. The entry only says 38-40, and to be honest I forgot about the 38-40 Remington. So I guess it could be either.
Does anybody know if making 38-40 Remington brass from 303 British requires lathe-turning, or is more of a resize plus trimming job?

I can't speak to the .38-40 Remington question. Can you see an image of the cartridge marking or ask the question? If it is .38-40 Winchester, it will be stamped 38W.

ndnchf is correct. My #2 centerfire chambered 38-40 is marked 38W on the bottom flat of the barrel.
As for the 38-40 Remington, Donnelly advises to use the .303 British case, anneal, expand to 380, trim, and fireform.
It seems a lot of extra work when the shoulder length of the 303 case is slightly longer than the full length of the 38-40 Rem case to begin with.  You should be able  to trim the .303 case to 1.77 inches then run through a full length sizing die and skip all the extra work.  The rim will work as is.

Don't think the #2 was available in 38-40 Remington (Hepburn).

I have a #2 in 38-40 as well as two 1-1/2s in 38-40.  They are marked "38W".  Use the Alliant pressure tested loads using Reloader 7 and you won't have trouble.  I have a pdf of the Alliant manual if you want a copy.
I have a #2 in 38-40 Remington also but would have to go look at the barrel marking.

Jack - I have an Alliant manual, but it does not have rifle loads for the old cartridges like .38-40, .44-40.  It just has cowboy revolver loads. Does yours have these?  I will say that I use a lot of Reloader 7 in pistol size rifle cartridges with great success.  .25 Stevens, .32 extra long, .32-20, .44-40 all shoot very well with it.  A capacity load closely matches original black powder loads.

The only known 44-40 Reloder 7 load data I have ever seen was for a 240gr lead bullet.
With this, it would be about 10% to 20% greater performance for use in such 44-40 chambered rifles.

A phone call to Alliant concluded that although no longer published data was available, the use of Reloder 7 was fine with the 200gr 44-40 loads...but no details were offered.

I have a #2 in 38-40 Rem-Hepburn.  Pistol grip, checkered stock, 30" 1/2 octagon barrel. Pre-1888 I believe.
