I am back to my home brew lube after straying several times and not finding any advantages.  I did try coloring it just for old times sake since the red valve and assemble lube ingredient has been replaced by a clear product.  I used some red food coloring.  Bad move.  It is not mixing with the lube,  Luckily the last pan pour resulted in a puddle of red that I could remove easily.  Been having red tipped fingers for a while.

I used that stuff for a long time. I added some of the Hornady liquid alox. Once I let the girls mix in some of their crayons and it got too stiff. I tried to adjust by adding some more vaseline. Lost my way and it didn't work as well as it had. Switched to Alberta and loved it. Now I am about out of that and will need to make a new batch of my old faithful stuff- without the crayons.

I have a few sticks of various lubes that are old and hard; so I cut a chunk off to add to my home brew lube just for the color. Better than tossing the old lube sticks out.

BPJack:

I used to buy wax dyes from candle makers to color the lube.
However shoe polish is a cheaper alternative to color your lube.

I started to collect for a fresh batch today. Parafin at the grocery store. Will go to the discount drug store for vaseline later this week and then go dig out the case lube from..... somewhere. If I find a jug of Liquid Alox, should I add some or just forget that little bit. Kids are too old to wanna add any crayon color.

Never used Vas-Par Wes. Just Alberta, SPG, Javelina and home brew. I figure the lanolin in it is good for my skin.

Not to pick nits, but I always heard it called Par-Vas when Barry mentioned it. Charlie Dell always claimed it was about useless while Barry Darr said it was fine.  I imagine they’re still arguing about it on that great range in the sky.   Roll Eyes

Never used or heard of Vaspar Joe.
My lube is 50% bee's wax, 40% Crisco, 10% Vaseline, by volume and the colored stick lube.

When I started in Schuetzen in Colorado in the mid 80s I used vas-par lube. It seemed lots of shooters were using Vaseline Paraffin RCBS case lube and when I asked about it, that was what they recommended. Some were using STP instead of RCBS case lube. Most of us, at least the group I was with were using Ron Long barrels. Most of us got lead in our bores but the rifles shot good anyway. Rons barrels were single point cut rifled. The lead was usually on the top of the lands and came out in narrow strips on a patch.
When I moved to Tacoma in 87 and started shooting with that group I noticed they seldom had leading issues. The Tacoma group were using beeswax instead of paraffin so I switched and my leading mostly went away. Still got leading in my 40-65 when using duplex loads and still on the top of the lands.
So about 2001 I ran out of that lube. My new lube was home made and consisted of beeswax, lanolin, compounded steam cylinder oil and EV olive oil. My leading went away and I did some of the best shooting ever with that lube. Finally ran out of that lube and switched to Javelina lube. Other than the strong smell I have no complaints.

I think Charlie Dell was right.

Westerner,

Charlie turned me against paraffin based lubes when he described a shooter cleaning long threads of lead out of his barrel after a shooting session.  Since beeswax serves much the same duty in a lube mix, it became my go to.  Charlie was insistent that any petroleum based components harmed a lube mix, and although I did use some of his mixes, when I mixed my own I used readily available items and have generally stuck with my own “Frog Guano” that uses a high enough %-age of lanolin to be a little pricey and more commonly a slightly modified version of Emmert’s that works well for both BP and smokeless.

I did use one petroleum based ingredient in my best and last home made lube. Compounded steam cylinder oil. The small refinery in Kentucky that made Green Velvet SCO went out of business so I tried a different brand but didn't get the same result. Was not able to source flax beeswax either, so I guess I'm just stuck using Javelina lube.   Smiley Smiley
