I have sized Starline brass in one step to 40-65 and then down to 38-56 by just using Imperial sizing wax.  I then anneal the neck by using a deep socket with a 1/4" bolt through the bottom chucked up in my cordless drill.  I set the propane torch setting on a bench and turn off the lights.  I have a skylight in the shop so it is light enough to see to work but dark enough to see when the cases just begin to start to turn red.  I then dump that case out of the socket and put another in.  I dump them into a metal bowl and don't use water at all. My press is an old Herter's turret press from about 1960 and it is a beast!  Tom

I went with annealing the brass. I built a little jig to hold and turn the brass during annealing. went back to the lube pad and RCBS lube, seemed to work best. Hope to get it to the range early nest week and see how it shoots

My annealing setup is just a battery drive drill motor with a piece of 1/4" SS rod chucked in it. I drop the case over the rod and spin it in the torch flame, and then point the drill down to let the cases drop in a bucket of water. Fast, and easy to do.

Using lanolin makes a big difference. Don't use too much.

I just did a 100 cases using pure lanolin, 3 short pulls with the lube wiped on with finger.  These where .40-82 from .45-90 brass, no issues, I did anneal first also.

Me too! My first experience with making 40 82. I used Imperial case wax. About three pulls and I made 40 82 out of 45 90. Lost only one case out of 100. Got a little carried away on the pull.

Have used 40-65 Starline  brass for re-forming to 33 WCF for my Winchester 1886 rifles.
I anneal using the Barsness method of candle-annealing.
It does not ruin the brass and the re-forming process  goes smoother and easier with just 33 WCF sizing die. Top 1/3 of case.
Light annealing/good lube really works and you save on brass
not being lost...
