Denver Show Heeren revisited (Read 2973 times)

	Last summer I had a thread on the Heeren I had picked up at the Denver (OK, Colorado Springs) show. Dusty Rhoades had asked for a pic of the complete rifle and I said that my gunsmith had it to work on fitting my scope mounts to the barrel and I would post a pic when I had it back. It's back! He carefully milled grooves in the rib to take the QD mounts I had found in a box of miscellaneous stuff and added a screw in the rib to keep the scope from creeping forward. So here it is and if the range ever reappears from under the glacier I'll post the shooting results.

	That's my favorite hunting scope, a 1 3/4x5 Redfield Widefield. I have another one on my 9.3x74R. I had to give $50 for this one;-) Just finished loading up some 7x65R test rounds for the Heeren. 160 grain Speer Grand Slams and some 4350 and 4831.

	Nice rifle. In the back of my mind I have lusted for a nice Heeren rifle, but that lust never has compelled me to pony up the $$$. Maybe some day. Curly

	Well, the glacier has melted, the mud has dried and the wind has dropped below 40 mph, so I headed to the range this morning. I had two other rifles that needed load testing so I only took the cast bullet loads for the Heeren. I was quite pleased and one load will definitely get some tweaking and that was 16 grains of 2400 with the Lyman 287308 165 grain gas check bullet. I fired the first 3 and it looked interesting through the low power rifle scope so I switched over to the spotting scope and you would think that after all these years I would know to not do that because it always screws up the group, but, I did and it did. It is still a one minute group at 100 yards but what night have been! Next time out I will unleash the jacketed loads. Coincidentally I was doing some reading last night and 16 grains of 2400 was "The Load" of C.E. Harris for military rifles shooting bullets of the weight common in the GI loads. 7x65R is not that far from 7x57 so...

	Neato, the 25-35 would make an interesting one to have. The Kaiser must have found his way over to Weatherby;-) If you can find out, let us know how the auctions turn out.

	Not a single shot but a really neat old Stutzen from 1941. I would be really interested to see the pencil-written serial number that should be in the forend. All of them I have seen seem to have been written by the same hand. I used to hunt with a vintage 1944 gun until a gentleman offered me so much I could not afford to keep it. 	Excuse the lousy picture but this is my rough equivalent. Not by a German factory but by a German smith. A 30-06 on a small ring action with some engraving on the floorplate and trigger guard. My backup hunting rifle and one of the most accurate I own.

	Thanks for the info SS. I suppose the 25-35 doesn't come up to the current minimum power levels in Austria/Germany that now exist (but took many a roebuck or chamois back in the day!). Achhh, I'm getting dyslexic in my old age! It wasn't a 6.5x52R but a 5.6x52R. Instead of a 25-35 it was a 22 Savage Hi-Power and that may explain why it got no bids in Germany although I'm sure their are folks on this list who would have no problem working with that.

	So unlike last year when the "Denver" Show was in Colorado Springs, this year it was in Greeley. I suppose we should just call it by its name, the Colorado Gun Collectors Show. There, that should do it (until it's in Cheyenne!). Anyway, as I said in another thread, the only thing I brought home (besides the memories of some fantastic guns, of course) was a very nice gift from an old friend. He knew about my Heeren from last year and he had a Heeren piece that he has been holding onto for a very long time hoping for a Heeren like mine from last year to show up. He decided to pass it on to me in the chance it would fit mine. It is a barrel with a forearm and a mounted Zeiss scope. I think there is a very good chance that it will work on my action. They were both proofed in the 1930s and all the superficial measurements I have taken seem to closely match. Of course the barrel will have to come off of mine for the real proof to happen. Oh by the way, it is chambered in 6.5x57R! I'll add some pictures here soon.

	Sounds like a great barrel/scope combo! Hope it fits without much or any work needed!
