If duplex loadings are acceptable for this discussion, the book "The Story of Pope's Barrels" has a number of targets shot by John D. Kelly that are quite impressive.  Most of the targets shown in the book are shot with smokeless, but there are some shot with duplex loads.

Steve Garbe probably knows a lot about this subject I suspect.  He used to hold matches that would give a good idea as to what very good targets would look like.  I had the intention of competing in his "Quart of Blood" matches but by the time I owned a suitable rifle the matches were done.

Keep in mind that it's also a bit tricky to convert old scores to modern scores because string measure was often used.  Plus reproductions of the targets were often drawings of the groups rather than photos.

I think at the time Pope made those guarantees of accuracy he was testing barrels with smokeless powders, and grease groove bullets. Not the BP/paper patch the post is asking about.

Going from memory so you may be right. Would have been a catalog before going to Stevens or from a Stevens catalog.

I believe it was Blackpowder and muzzle loaded.

Either way, the “guaranteed” groups certainly were larger than some known actual groups. Thought it just might add some perspective.

Back then quite a few of the bench matches were the old string measure matches. Take a look at the length of string.

String measure is the best way to compare new scores to old. Can use any target.
I think that was what Steve Garbe had in mind when we shot string targets at Cody in the NRC matches. We still have a string match at Hamilton MT each year.
