old accuracy records for BP

Just curious, does anyone have information on accuracy records from the 1880s using BP off the bench. Information such as caliber, bullet used etc. Just trying to work out what I should be trying to achieve to match the results the old timers were getting.
Mike.

Back then, what we call benchrest shooting was mostly done with a machine rest.

When were Single-Shot-Rifle benchrest matches first started?

I know Seattle WA. had the first "modern day" ones  but that was modern guns and jacketed  bullets I think after WW2.
IIRC ???

You are wrong.  Modern benchrest started in Johnstown, NY.

Possibly ...but there's a chance I'm right😄 I'll have to dig through my old precision shootings.

Apparently there's some information you do not know about. I will get the article from precision shooting and you can eat some Crow.

And if I am wrong I get to choose how to cook the Crow....

As requested I'm only interested in records set using black powder and cast lead bullets.

Maybe so, but I'll warrant you those PNW fellas were coached by the East coast guys on how to do it. Roll Eyes Donaldson, Whelen, et al were notorious letter writers and I'll bet that USPS worked in an East to Westerly direction back then! Wink

There has been a book or two written about the bench rest target muzzle loaders of that era. It or they, covered such makers as Warren & Bilinghurst (not sure about spelling). I don't know much about the content of those books nor availability of them. Perhaps Steve Garby (has posted on this forum from time-to-time in the past) will chime in. He is quite knowledgeable of such topics.
There is/was a small group somewhere in the MidWest that holds matches for such rifles. My guess is their level of accuracy is the same as the shooters of the 1880s.

There are indeed two Americas. Simply put, it is not the haves and have nots. The two Americans are in reality divided into those who do and those who don't.

According to Glenn Newick in "The Ultimate in Rifle Accuracy" c1989 the Puget Sound Snipers Congress of Seattle, WA held the first modern bench match in 1944 with 37 shooters.
In early summer 1947 J.W. Prescott held a small match in Machias, NY.  This was such a success that Harvey Donaldson organized a three day match labor day weekend 1947 at the Pine Tree Rifle Club in Johnstown, NY attended by 28 competitors.
  I stand corrected again. Embarrassed
