Looking for R.F. Sedgley ad / catalog
Jan 13th, 2023 at 10:58am
Print Post
I am looking for R.F. Sedgley ad or a catalog from the early 1930s that shows their .22 Hornet High Wall. Every ad I've found in the American rifleman shows the Springfield Hornet bolt-action.

I would like a high resolution scan ... and will consider purchasing the ad / catalog if necessary.

Thank you,
Joe Dobrzynski

Joe,
There is a thread going on the double gun forum now that briefly mentions the Sedgley built 22 hornet on the 1922 action.  Maybe one of those guys could help you with the High Wall.  There is also a guy that goes by Researcher that has lots of ads type info that is mostly on doubles but maybe he has this type of info also.

I recall that R. F. Sedgley bought a bunch of Winder Muskets from the government, converting some of them to centerfire and rechambering them to 22 Hornet. However, they used the old 22 rimfire barrels, both 22 Long R and 22 Short, so they shot poorly.

A friend has a Sedgley Springfield 1903/1917 bolt action.  Sedgley thought the 1903 bolt was a bit weak and machined the P-17 bolt to fit.

Do you have a source for that info rich?

The Sedgley / bannerman 1917 / 1903 parts guns are fairly well known to be a mix of parts to produce low cost rifle. The sporter examples of these are very basic, very unlike the regular Sedgley 1903 sporters.

I've had reason to wonder about Sedgley.  A long time ago I in my ignorance bought a .22 Lovell marked Sedgley that is built ('swelp me God), on a cast Ballard receiver.  Needless to say I've never fired it!

The bit about those Winders is no surprise.

Chances are pretty good that Abbey Books will have a reprint of any old catalog you might want. I think you can look them up at Cornell Publications.

Having once had one of those Winder Low Wall Sedgley .22 Hornets, I can attest to that! It retained its original .22 Short barrel. I tried, Lord knows I tried, every trick in the book to get it to shoot - right down to 35gr. cast bullets at cat sneeze velocity - and it wouldn't reward me with anything better than Minute-of-Elephant accuracy. Awaaaay it went.

I do recall killing a crow with it at around 100 yards. Must've been the unluckiest crow to ever draw a breath.
