A most interesting Single Shot rifle

I want to share a link that was provided by lancaster over on the NitroX forum.

This in my opinion is one very fine piece in every respect. It is not a powerful rifle but the workmanship in precision, fit and finish, and overall appearance is second to none. Don't tell me it requires CNC to do good work. LOL (I once had an Engineer at Honeywell tell me that. He knew he had made a mistake before the words reached my ears. We are still friends and laugh about it on occasion)

Beautiful workmanship, and a very advanced design for the period!

Was it really that advanced in design. There are many examples of similar loading methods (loading at the breech) that go back more then a 100 years before. One that is an example and pre dates this rifle by about 20 or so years is the M1819 Hall Breechloader which was a standard issue weapon for the US military. It was in manufactured until ~1846. Another very similar was the Sartoris carbine used by the British. I am sure the maker of this piece was aware of other concepts and designs. However there is no way that detracts from the maker for anything. As I said a most beautiful carbine. Should be in a museum IMO.

I will say this from having been a Toolmaker and then Mechanical engineer for near 50 years, and given the period that this work was done, the cutting of the breechblock slot and the fitting of the block into the slot was no small feat of precision. Damn that M. Nowotny was one skilled gun maker

Pictures fooled me at first.  It seemed to be a version of the Ferguson breechloader, but it's not.

Anyone have knowledge of the rifled roundball and it’s usage? The rifle shows a period of great innovation and skill, thanks for posting.

Looks to me like the real hammer is internal and the one you see is just to cock it and let you know how the other one is.

maybeso on the internal hammer- but then, where do you put something to prime it? maybe the reason it is in such pristine shape is that it never got any use.

The nipple would be on the rotating block.
