Cutting Paper Patches

I currently cut patches one at a time. Recently I was in Joann Crafts store and noticed a Fiskers Rotary Knife on a 12" x 12" ruled base. It is made for cloth but I see no reason paper could be used and cut several sheets at a time. Base has various angles built in for accurate cuts.  Has anyone else tried this route or are there better options for accurate cuts on multiple sheets? Thinking out loud.

I use one of those Fiskars cutters, "borrowed" it from my wife who was amused with me wanting to put diapers on my bullets.Works far better than I had hoped I cut four sheets at a time when making patches for my .45 calibre stuff.

Definitely a very good addition to the paper patch loaders' toolkit.
Happy New Year!

Thanks bluesman. I just read the cast bullets paper patch blog and there are others there already doing it so it appears I am late to the party. Oh well, it is a learning experience

I use an old office paper shear that is about 18"x18" with a cutting blade hinged at the top.  It will accurately cut 5 or 6 sheets; maybe more.  I do the layout in fine pencil on one sheet, stac  sheets and cut.  It is much better than cutting with a template and exacto knife.
This method cuts a lot of patches which I put the patches in an envelope marked with size for use when I decide to patch bullets.

I use those craft cutters to cut the strips of paper to the width and then use a tiny tot stapler to staple a half dozen or so sheets together. Then lay the template on top of each packet and mark with a pencil . Then cut the patches and store them in an envelope.
I find that by doing a half dozen or so strips in a packet at a time the size stays pretty true more than that the bottom few patches may be longer than the top ones.
The cutters that will take 18 inch paper are good when you can’t get the 12 inch rolls

I got mine a Bernina and she darns my socks. When I get a hole in one she says "darn sock" and throws it in the trash!

So the 12" x 12" rotary Fiskers cutter should work for the price? They are on sale at 40% off currently so I may have to get one. Tired cutting one at a time manually.

Hey Flatlander,

Just get a good office paper cutter.  I cut 10 sheets at a time with mine.

Many years ago I "self-published" a short article about my techniques for cutting paper patches on my website:

Works for me, and has for years.  I hope this helps you.

Bring on the frugal side I went with a fiskers roller cutter to cut my patch strips. Maybe not the easiest to get the strip width set right but it does a nice job if you are careful. What I wasn't happy with was trying to hold the strips to cut the ends and keep things the same. I came up with a clamp so I can hold a stack and then just slice with an exacto knife or single edge razor blade. Easy to put a stack of stapled strips in and slice away.

Nice idea. Now I have to get the MSC Catalog out and order parts to build one. Thanks much.

My bad, I should have said I got the clamp at harbor freight. The base plate was some material I had laying around but a piece of hard wood would work just as well. If you use wood a coat or 2 of poly finish wouldn't hurt anything.

I use a table top type paper cutter that has a measuring grid embossed on the top.  I first cut my paper into strips using the measuring grid to cut the width I want.  Takes only a few seconds to cut the 14" long Southworth paper I use into strips.
After the paper is cut into strips I then use a template to mark  some of the strips.  With some of the strips marked I hold about 6 unmarked strips with one marked one on top. I then use large hand shears to cut at the marks producing 7 cut patches with each cut.  Fastest way I have ever found to cut patches .
