Mixing IMR & Hodgdon powders

I have partial batches of Trailboss, one from IMR and another from Hodgdon after the acquisition of IMR. Can these batches be thoroughly mixed and used for low to medium loads of 45 LC?  I know that the same powders from the two mfgs. tend to differ slightly in burn rate but can carefully playing work up produce workable loads?

They are both extremely similar, but I don't mix them myself. I simply use all of one container up, and then switch to the next. Never saw any reason to mix them together as the only advantage would be saving space in my powder cabinet.

Is it not the case that powder makers blend two or three lots of a given powder to get the performance within canister powder specs?

Myself I would not personally do that myself.

The mixing of granular solids to attain a homogeneous composition is not a trivial process.

I keep my supply of 4227 separated, Australian and Canadian made. Impression, many not be fact, point of impact slightly different, could be just temperatures when used.

Recent  small amount of each left in cans. Mixed  them, marked as mix, will use for offhand practice loads . As Chris says proper mix not easy to obtain.

My personal practice is to avoid mixing lots of even the same smokeless powder.  At the pressure ranges we generally load, it would probably not be dangerous, but I don’t want to risk it.  YMMV, but that’s my way of doing things.
Why not use up one lot then use the next?  Is it all that important to take one can or jug off the shelf?

I would not do that, too much of a chance of mixing it improperly and having an issue with pressure.

I don't avoid it due to any concerns of danger. I just don't see any reason to do it? It seems like just another step not needed. It's easier to just use one lot up, and then open or start on the next one.

"better than changing cans and finding the load substantially changes"
So much for makers blending to be within specs for a powder. They must have some generous specs. I started a new can of 4320 and had to change my load by 3 grains to get back anywhere near my original. If I had blended the two cans before I worked up the first load it would have saved me a lot of time and material.

As far as I can tell IMR and Hodgdon Trail Boss are identical. AUS Alliant -> IMR -> Hodgdon. Loading a few with power from each can, exercising caution to be well below max charge should establish differences. Lot to lot differences can't be too much or the published load data would be useless.
For the really suspicious or paranoid finding someone with a pressure trace setup would solve the problem with more certainty.

But there is the famous quote: "Not everything you read on the internet is true" A Lincoln.
