"new" tip-up
Dec 13th, 2022 at 12:33pm
Print Post
This rifle arrived from the auction this morning.
Described only as 32 it's a 38 cal centerfire.
38 S&W chambers, 38 Special does not.
Did tip-ups come in 38S&W?
I have some 38 Short Colt in an inaccessible spot or I'd try those also.
I will do a chamber cast as soon as I'm able.

Aaron

No, Stevens did not catalog .38 S&W for any grade of tip-up.  And the .38-45 is MUCH longer.  Has the firing pin been modified from a rimfire?

not that I can see, I haven't removed it.
the tip is round-nosed and there are no extra holes in the breachface

SN#'s match, FWIW

My guess is .38 long colt. Once you do a chamber cast you’ll figure it out. Nice looking tip-up.

Either .38 Long CF., or .38 Short CF is my guess. You'd need to check how much too short the chamber is for a .38 Special and that will give a clue as to which it's chambered for.

It's a revelation - but really not a surprising one - that on request Stevens would chamber at least a tip-up rifle in one of the less powerful pistol cartridges.  There were period pistol/rifle combos in .44-40, .38-40, and .32-20, after all.

I'll measure it, but 38 long CF is longer than 38 special as I recall.
i can't really get in my office/gunroom these days so it might be a while.

.38 Long is 1.03" and .38 Special is 1.16" But I use .38 Special all the time in my .38 Long guns, and haven't had to trim a case yet. I use heeled bullets, which are much larger for the .38 Long, .38 Ex. Long, and .38 Short.

without measuring, I'm sure it's not 38 long.
