swap value $ etiquette?

Print Post
my standard valuation has been the average of sold closed auctions for each persons item.
the values looked up are in no way typically what either of us would pay but a measure of how close the values are.

does  my reasoning seem OK as a way to compare swap value?

Recently(not here) I'm running into fellows wanting the high end of their item and "what I paid 15 years ago" to value my end of the deal.

How it's been and always will be among strangers and sometimes "friends".

I find that friends usually price stuff cheaper on both ends, but when dealing with strangers I find the same as you do. Their stuff is gold, and yours is scrap metal price. But we always have the option of saying no, and although it might be sad to pass on something, it's better than paying too much.

The fellow I dealt with acted like I was trying to rip him off because he had trouble believing current sold price of the item he wanted and the item he had for trade were dead even price wise.He was using non sold "buy it now" price for his item and 15-20 year old buddy price for mine.
Done with my rant. it sounds like it's probably a common thing .People on this board  seem to be very realistic its other places they get a little silly.

In a gun deal your RUST is not the same as my FINE AGED PATINA.
Your gun is beat up  mine has honest frontier wear.

Depends on what one is actually referring too.
An extremely proven competitive and well used but still a competitive rifle with Providence.
Or just something that someone might just like to have.

I think my Folks rifle was made in Providence.
Maybe it was Pittsburgh.

With friends, I don't dicker -- I quote what I think is a fair price, take it or leave it.   Or offer what I think is a fair price, take it or leave it.   When "dealing" I ask a little more and might take less, or offer a little less and might pay more.  Works for me.....

I once had a seller display his rather wreck of a rifle and reverently declare "That is the original rust!"  I almost hated to pass on such audacity.

Thank God and unlike some of those who are.now in this current generation still might have some God given common sense.

If anyone might want to have a very competitive and a proven lead and tin cast bullet breech seating benchrest rifle for themselves.
I do have one but one but it will also not be sold to anyone who is not willing  and or is not capable of taking the time that is s actually needed to be able to take full advantage of it.
They can also just simply go elsewhere and they can just continue in trying to buy their way into the extremely competitive winning list.

Well, that's certainly not the rifle for me then. I want one with PROVIDENCE.

I agree as it is not something that most folks would want to own.
Especially around here as our matches are all but nonexistent right now.

I don't depend on divine intervention. Mine need "provenance".
