Bench Rifle Set Up

Going to try and make "Chucky" shoot.  A new Buttstock is needed and some kind of a Forend.  He's a bit Muzzle Heavy and any suggestions as to how the weight should be balanced would be appreciated.  2 1/4" Barrel and somewhere around 35 pounds.    David

my bull barrel Hoch  32-40 and CPA 33-47 don't bother with a forends.i set the barrels in a v slot I made for my rest at a location I marked that seems to group best.the guns lay on the set up beautifully.

I really like the looks of that rifle you have.

If it was me I would look into a barrel sled and a butt stock that is Benchrest friendly.

John,

I don't recognize him, although Tom Trevor might remember his name.

Thanks for the pics.  Butstock is the same and the barrel is fairly rough except the underside is polished where he had his rest.  Is that his name on the lid of his shooters box?  Going to do a Chamber Cast tomorrow.

If there are no more than the eight holes total in the barrel for the scope bases, then not likely the same rifle, as the mounts are in different locations on each rifle.

The rifle picture of the shooter at his bench seems to be a little smaller diameter barrel than the one the OP has pictured. And it might be blued also?

I agree, so will just have to wonder...
Chamber Cast says 32-40,  8 Very Narrow Lands .032 and 1-15 1/2 twist.

I was told by a member here that the balance fore and aft is critical to good groups as it affects recoil.  His recommendation was that the muzzle weight be about 1 pound heavier than that of the buttstock weight where it contacts the rear bag.  This weight distribution allows a smooth recoil straight to the rear.  It has worked for me.

Regards,
Joe

Should name that thing "The Missouri" with a barrel like that. Good grief...

JHM, More like Misery as the Muzzle slipped as I was putting it on the bench and it caught my thigh.

Bore with a Pin Gage is .316 but when I measured over the grooves on the muzzle cast I get .326 dia which works out to .005 depth of the grooves.  With narrow lands of about 1/32" what am I looking for as far as a Bullet?  Or am I headed down the Rabbit Hole of Paper Patched?  David
