Assuming the checkered fancy walnut stock is factory, was it a rarely-chosen option on what I assume is a Pacific model?

I am not up on the various versions. I will be anxious to get ahold of it and pick the brains of the experts here.

I'm not the final authority, but I'd bet a dollar the checkering is factory.

I would think it’s all factory except the cleaning rod. The flat top stock checkering is a bit unusual, but the design looks factory. If anything was changed out on it, it would have been a long time ago.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not positive, but I'm not sure the forearm is original. Once you get it you can remove the forearm and buttstock and check for serial numbers on the end of each, plus inside the buttplate.
The checkering looks factory style, and possibly just worn, or stripped to cause the flattened tops.
I was looking at this one before the auction, but never bid. I thought it would have gone a lot higher, and the end price was a great buy!

Vall, When I looked at the first forearm picture I thought it had an ebony or horn tip, but when I enlarged the second forearm picture it appears to just be darkened. Also seems to have the through pin in the middle, shape looks original. But as you said, the matching serial number will either confirm or not. Good buy, the forged, double set triggers, action alone is worth the price!

I thought the forearm just looked too nice compared to the buttstock, plus it would be as unusual to not see the forearm checkered when a Ballard has a checkered buttstock as it is to see a Pacific checkered at all.
Being a JM Marlin also, I expected to see the horn V insert in the forearm, as many early JM Marlin Ballards did.
I'm sure Jack will let us know what it reveals once he's got it in hand.

Jack,

Congratulations.  I bid on this early on.  Next auction, will call you - no sense bidding against each other.

I thought it would go higher as well and set a top bid of 1200 and went to bed.  I was surprised to see I won it.  I got this scope as well.  Assuming the knobs work well it is a steal these days.

Lyle,

You can always reimburse me for the extra $$$ you cost me Smiley

I wonder what will happen to Wards if the new Oregon gun law hold up.

The scope was another great buy Jack! I would think the adjustments will free up with a soak in a mix of acetone/ATF if by chance they are stuck. I missed that scope in my search of the auction prior to the start.
OSP has said on Dec. 8th all firearms checks will be paused, even if they were applied for prior to Dec. 8th, so sales will come to a halt.
But as of Dec. 2nd the lawsuit against 114 was heard in court in Pendleton, and the judge said she will give a ruling Dec. 7th as to whether she'll put a "stay" in place to stop implementation of 114 until a full court case can proceed.
Also last week a 2nd lawsuit was filed in Oregon by the 2nd Amendment Foundation and Sportsman's Warehouse to stop 114, so two groups are trying to halt this stupid, illegal measure now. I wish they'd get together and pool their resources, instead of wasting half of them.

Hopefully, there is an exception for antiques at least so the Ballard doesn't get caught up.  Ward's said it will be the 14th before they get all items shipped.  I am sure they must be prioritizing all modern firearms.  I am paying by check and will probably get the invoice in a couple of days.  Then a couple more for them to get it in the mail.  It may end up as a Christmas present to me!
