32-20 Loads for a Stevens 44
Nov 22nd, 2022 at 4:39pm
Print Post
I recently purchased a Stevens 44 in 32-20.  Very nice condition. Sn. 209XX.

I'm gearing up to make some loads for it and was going to follow recipes from the 4th edition of Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook.

The Handbook, however, has a caution about using the listed loads in older firearms designed for BP.

I don't know how to "age" the rifle or determine if it was intended for BP.
Could it have been made in the "smokeless" era?

If it was a BP rifle, are there suitable smokeless loads?

Any help is appreciated.

Mike.

Mike,

Years ago I had a Stevens 44 in 32-20.  I got a load from the old Lyman Handbook of the 1950s and those loads were way too hot for the Stevens 4.  The brass didn't hold up at all.   I got rid of the rifle.   I can't vouch for the condition/headspace.   I have heard that, much later, Stevens made the 44 in 22 Hornet.  I saw one once at a gunshow and  the seller showed me doccumentation that it was original.

The current Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has a  lawyer proof statements with all their loads.   One of my 32-20s is a #2 Remington Rolling Block and I have shot a smokless load using 4227  and a 115 grain gas check bullet in it for 40 years without any problems.  That's the rifle my kids learned to shoot with.

The 32-20 is a great cartridge.  Fun and inexpensive to shoot.

George

Load the 115 grain bullet for about 1350 fps, using magnum pistol powders, 4227, AA#9, 4100, Blue Dot, 2400.  These will keep you under ~1200 lbf. of breech thrust, and the link will hold up for a reasonable period of time.

If you must use Bullseye, Red Dot, Unique, etc. load for subsonic velocity.  The fast powders generate much higher peak pressures for a given MV than slower ones.

Stevens did put out a few Model 417s in the late '30s chambered for the Hornet. They also sold quit a few in .32-40 before 1903.  OK for a while, but they "shot loose" in a hurry. This is the failure mode the old 44 is prone to: the link takes such a battering due to the geometry that the holes loosen up, and when that happens the headspace gets excessive.

Ordinary wear will do this too, which is why we find so many plain .22s with loose linkages.  If your lever does not "snap" over center when you close the action, replace the link and pins, or ream the link, breecblock and lever for oversize pins (I use 5mm), before you go any farther.

MIke, I have a Stevens 44 in .32-20 also the loads I use the most are.
Lyman 311359 115 gr with 4.3grs of unique or 2.8grs of trailboss
Arsenal 312124 (lyman 311008 copy) with 4.3 grs of unique or 13.0grs of reloader 7 or 2.8grs of trailboss.
All loads are starline brass and low enough pressure for a 44 action the trailboss loads are very quiet at around 830 fps

I use the same loads for my Stevens 44 as I use in my old S&W hand ejector. Mostly with the Lyman 3118 but also with Hornady's 90 gr swaged SWC.
For the 115 gr 3118 I've loaded, either 4.5 gr Unique, 3.5 gr Bullseye or 3 to 3.6 gr of Trailboss. The data I've seen for all these loads run well under 1000fps in a revolver. This comes from a Ken Waters article published in Handloader magazine quite some time ago.
My favorite load is the Bullseye and 3118. The barrel on my 44 is  well worn but with the Ideal tang peep and standard blade front I can ding the small 4" gong at my club range all day. It can do under 2" on paper. Not match winning but good enough to put meat in the pot.
I once owned several S&W revolvers and a SA reproduction by Uberti and they all shot well with any of these loads. I figured the 44 would be good to go with any of these lower pressure revolver loads.
If you would like a copy of Kens article, PM me an email address and I'll send it out to you.

John
