What would be the possibility of finding a used pewter fore end for a 74 Sharps rifle?

Considering that the traditional pewter tip is normally poured into place, you'd be smarter to look for a complete forearm.

Sorry I wasn't more clear in my description. Yes I meant to say a complete forearm.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Doubt the odds are good, and then will it fit your barrel contour? If it's slightly small it can be opened up, but if it's too big it's tough to have it look decent.

jim,
I believe there are still some artisans in the muzzle loading community that pour their own pewter nose caps.  I know that it was being done 50 years ago when the first wave of Hawkin style repros were being done.  You might be pleasantly surprised if you check out there among the front stuffers.  Wink

Sound like something Lee Shaver might be able to do. I would think the hard part is going to be cutting the wood in that sharps pattern.

I’ve poured several, not hard at all.  But is that the problem with the forearm?  If it is, the biggest issue would be removing the old pewter, and then the forearm would need refinishing after the pour.

Perhaps you could have a good ML smith cut to shape and fit a forend and then pour the nosecap in the Sharps pattern.

Do you have an original or a repro? Here is a  source, you're on your own on that pewter tip though!

You might also try a WTB post, I am sure someone somewhere had a stock up graded?

I am building a 74 from a kit. Will probably wind up with a standard forend but I will keep looking. Haven't done the barrel yet so if I find one I can do the barrel to match.

Years ago, I found instructions someplace online. You might even find a youtube video. If you decide to pour your own, do a practice run. Get a piece of scrap walnut, about  six inches long, route out a barrel channel, contour the exterior to the approximate shape of a forearm, and give it a try. I have had mixed results, but none were bad and some very good. The attached photo if on a BSA Int. that I re-configured a few years ago to make it look more like a schuetzen rifle.
If you want to give it a try and have questions, please feel free to contact me.

Thanks... I may just do that. I have some walnut scraps laying around. Like that barrel configuration. The wedding band is a bit unusual.

What about an Ebony tip.  Have them on several rifles and they look great.
