Anyone use a Hawk spotting scope camera?

The Longshot company in Texas manufactures these as well as target cameras that transmit long distance back to the shooter to get a good look at his/her target.

I shoot BPCR almost always on steel, and the Hawk looks like a good way to get some trigger time without a spotter.  It attaches to your spotting scope and uses wifi to transmit the picture (or video clip) to a phone or tablet the shooter can look at on the bench or mat.

Was wondering if any forum members have one of these and would share any feedback?

Thanks -

Don

Don,

I have not used the Hawk but have the Spot Shot WI-FI spotting scope camera which works great for my needs.

It's significantly less expensive than the Hawk.

I know a guy who uses a similar product called PhoneSkope.    It looks to be a 3D printed adapter that's available for most phones and spotting scopes.  It just allows you to record a video through the spotting scope and replay it.

It works surprisingly well.  He was using it on silhouette targets and he showed me a replay where you could see the bullet in slow motion flying just over top of a pig silhouette.

At what distance, or does the mirrage distort the picture?

Thanks for the replies.  My research shows that SME and the Hawk are the two cameras that would do what I need to shoot w/o a spotter for practice.  The Hawk advertising shows mostly high powered rifle guys shooting off benches on paper.  After each shot, I guess one takes a snapshot, finds a new hole (on the tablet screen being used), marks it, the software can calculate group size.

For BPCR, I suppose I would tap the video button on the my tablet screen (using the Hawk app), shoot, then replay the video to see where I hit the steel - or the ever-too-familiar cloud of dust where the bullet hit the berm.  Roll Eyes

Sportslube - I’m thinking the capabilities of one’s spotting scope is the limiting factor in how good these cameras are.

If I get one, I will write a review and post it here.

Well, since the time I started this thread, the company lowered the price $50 so I ordered a Hawk camera.  I had also emailed them with questions and got a prompt reply from their tech support.  All of the reviews I’ve read are positive - so I’m expecting good things.  Should have it by this weekend - need to pick a rifle, load some rounds and go try it.  I’ll report back with my observations.

Anyone use a Hawk spotting scope camera? Test/vide

I promised to get back with a review on the Hawk camera after I tried it out.  I had previously loaded the Longshot app on my iPad and placed it next to the mat in a tablet holder that rotates from portrait to landscape - that came in handy.

I got my scope on the gong at 421 yards and attached the camera by turning the big plastic screw down until it gripped the eyepiece.  Then I turned on the camera and in the Settings section of my iPad, I selected the Hawk as the wifi source for the tablet.  Here is where a bit of information I found on another forum came in handy.  One must wait about two minutes after this last step before tapping the Longshot icon on the screen to open the application.  Otherwise, the app will not recognize the camera.  Once I selected the camera on the app, the picture appeared on my iPad screen.  If the picture is slanted because of how the scope attaches to the tripod, you can rotate the front of the camera to straighten the picture in the screen.  Of course I jiggled the scope while doing all this, so by looking at the iPad screen, I found the gong again, fine tuned the focus and was ready to go.

I was shooting a Shiloh .45-100 with a 10x MVA scope.  The screen has (among other things) a square orange record button on the right side.  Tapping it will take a snapshot of the target - more useful for shooting paper once you are nearly zeroed in.  My understanding is that after your shoot, you take another snapshot, see the new bullet hole, and touch the spot with your finger.  The software then marks the shot and gives it a sequence number.  If you load the target dimensions and distance to the target, it will calculate the group size. I didn’t test this feature.

Touching and holding the record button a couple of seconds starts the video recording mode.  This is better for shooting steel as one probably needs sighters to get on target.  I did this with all seven rounds I had and reviewed the video after each shot - of course it helped that I was on steel on my first shot! To review the video, I had to back out of the record mode and select the archive where the videos and snapshots are stored in the camera.  Before the next shot, I reselected camera mode.  I later transferred the first and last video to my iPad.

You can tap this link to the Longshot website, scroll down and view my videos.

Out of room to type anymore - questions?

I got a Spot Shot WI-FI spotting scope camera for Christmas but haven't been to the range with it yet.  I got a shot of the bird feeder and hooked it up to one of Skalkaho's teleidoscopes.
