Oehler Chronograph question

Is  an Oehler 35 chronograph obsolete when compared with the Magnetospeed or LabRadar models.  I have never owned a chronograph and a gentleman at the range has an Oehler in good condition for $225.  Tom  Undecided

I believe the Oehler you referenced sells for over twice that amount. I would hesitate to say that it is obsolete, more what you would expect of it. The Lab Radar is the new darling at over $500. it is easier to set up and use as it doesn't use sky screens, therefor more portable. I pondered whether to invest in one, but decided for my needs and range situation, my very old Qelher 33 works just fine. I spoke with GT on this site, and he was very helpful, you might contact him by PM. Krag As a side note, did you ever acquire a highwall hammer?

I'd never give up my Oehler 35P.the company support is great   they actually pick up the phone and talk to you.
I think the price seems fair.if it's the "P" model with printer. If it's the early one with just 2  screens sans printer I'd say $150 closer to going rate.BTW the old one works fine,I rarely use my printer anyway.I just write the data down in my log book.

I purchased a LabRadar a few years ago.  Previously had one that required the paper board guide to shoot through.

The LabRadar is not inexpensive, but I have used it a lot more than the older style as it can be set up anywhere and without going in front of the firing line or waiting for the line to clear (and them waiting for me to get set up).

Much easier to do velocity readings and group testing as no additional set up is necessary.  I use a data card in mine and download the info to my computer.  It allows examining the results on a spread sheet.  I print these and keep them in a binder with all the load data.

Yes, it is more than some other styles, but I look at it as a "once" purchase (like a good spotting scope).

Great technology.

Mike.

I got an 35P some 25 or more years ago and am very pleased with it.   Not too long ago I considered getting a LabRadar but decided I'd just stick witht he 35P after reading about some of the issues with the LabRadar.  I'd say #224 is a mighty good price if the 35P is complete.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Not sure obsolete is the right terminology since Oehler still supports these and gives great service. Yes, they're not as easy to use as the Labradar, but I wont let my 35P go, and love the way it works. Setting up takes more time, but it's a great chronograph and I love it.
