Bad Shilen barrel refurb?
Nov 7th, 2022 at 5:04pm
Print Post
I ruined my 32 CPA barrel by leaving some kind of bore cleaner in it over the last winter.  The lands are pitted.  Is it possible/feasible to either reline it or have it renewed to a larger caliber?  It is currently .3205.

How does it shoot? Still accurate? No?
Yes, what bore cleaner?

I would also reach out to Shilen to see if they have had a similar  problem reported to them. would be good to be able to identify the culprit.  Some solvents come with instructions to not leave the solvent in the barrel for longer than a specified time. Contacting the folks at CPA would be next on my list. All parties would benefit from the information.

Any solvent, to my knowledge, that has ammonia in the formula, can harm the bore if left longer than 15 minutes max. Most I have seen, warn of this. A short whiff is all it takes to detect its presence.

Like Wes Turner said: “shoot it”!  I looked down the bore of my main bench rifle with a borescope and freaked out seeing all the pits and what looked like tears.  It still shoots as well as ever.

Now if it doesn’t shoot well, then rebore would be my first choice.

What a shame! I lost two great shooting barrels doing the same thing. Both on new builds, to say my emotional state was and still not kind to the the solvent maker. No where did it state not to leave the solvent in for any period of time. Feel your pain!

I do not recall, but it was either shooters choice or an old batch of Hoppes that was being used up.  Now i use a wet patch of Patch Out or Eds Red, followed by wiping dry and a final patch of Ballistol, in small amount.

Wow, two barrels wiped out by bore solvent! Geesh!  Would you mind telling us what brand it was so we don't do it also?

As ‘ oneatatime ‘ mentioned Sweets could be the culprit. Sweets has a high concentration of full strength ammonia.  Ammonia of this strength can be corrosive to several metals such as copper, brass and stainless alloys. Usually stainless stress corrosion is connected to ammonia so just maybe barrels could fall into this category. Either way strong ammonia can cause problems. I’m not talking about household strength ammonia.

Anybody who has used Sweets with bronze bore brushes must know that they dissolve and get smaller in diameter with this solvent. The bright blue color means it’s eating and breaking down copper jacket gilding and your brush.
As I recall Shooters Choice also contains quite a bit of ammonia.

Sweets is the #1 culprit for SS damage although the label plainly states max minutes it should be left. That said, it’s also probably the best copper eater out there.
#2 culprit is likely mixing different solvent in bore.

Once I have cleaned out all the copper with Sweets as per the instructions, and a tight patch is clean,I always wet patch with Shellite  just to be sure, sweets oil to finish. Mal in au.

too bad about the barrel  I use Sweets but I know what it can do. Early on I had the experience of leaving a pistol cleaning brush covered with Sweets on a bench, went to put it away and found it discolored and deteriorating. Still recommend the stuff but cautious.
