What accuracy bullets have you Guys found that work well with the .319 Douglas barrel? I know David Moss has one around 205?  Curious on lightest to heaviest bullets that work. Kinda screws me up with all my other barrels being 321-322,I have like eight moulds from 165 to 242 grain.Thankyou, appreciate it.Pete
I forgot to add..14 twist......

Why not resize a few of the ones you already have? It sure would be inexpensive, and cheaper, too. What the heck, it's only a couple of thou. Roll Eyes

Hi Pete,

I use the Mos 205gr mould CPA recommended with my .319 Douglas barrel. The base band measures .322 and its the best preforming bullet I've used in this barrel to date.

For fixed ammo or breech seating?

Throat configuration/diameter? Gently tapered leade on the rifling lands or an abrupt one? First thing I would do is perform a chamber cast to determine all that, it will determine the best bullet diameter, and if it should be tapered/non-tapered. I would then consult with Accurate Molds and have a mold cut to satisfy its demands. I may be all wet, but it's how I would approach a new barrel.

Ya I have a 321 sizer die...and A 320 I made from a Lee sizer die for my German Rifle. The 14 twist  was what I was wondering on  with bullet weight.

Might be time to apply the Greenhill Formula to determine optimal bullet length (weight is inconsequential in that regard). Don't know the formula off the top of my head, I have to Google it every time I need it. (Greenhill not optimal for jacketed high vel stuff, but good for our slow moving cast stuff.)

Mine stabilizes fine in my 15 twist barrel. The Mos bullet from my mould is 1.1 in length.

Same bullet out of a 14 twist barrel 1475fps.

Sg: 1.78
The bullet will be well stabilized and yaw will be minimized. This is a good twist for maximum ballistic performance.

Pete you are a better schuetzen shooter than me, but here is what my CPA with the 0.319" Douglas barrel likes.

Hoch 320200D  ( the D is supposed to signify that its for a Douglas barrel ).  Pope style 1.070" long.  Bands are 0.320, 0.319, 0.317, 0.316, 0.315, 0.312, nose 0.311

I also have a similar one that Steve Brooks cut for me that might be a little better.  It's the same style of bullet, but with slightly larger bands but it's still possible to seat with a plugged case when cast in 20:1.  It's 1.050" long, bands at 0.322", 0.320, 0.318, 0.316, 0.314, 0.314, 0.314.   I'm pretty sure this bullet is capable of shooting a 250 in capable hands.

I should add that I have the Mos mold that CPA sells but there is no way to use it in this rifle without a seater with some leverage.

Chris.

Douglas barrels spend their share of time in the winner's column. Testing loads will give you facts for a decision. Perhaps you can borrow a different mold (or simply get bullets) from fellow competitors to try.

I have a Shilen barrel that is .3199 with a long tapered leade for breech-seating. This shoots well. I'm testing both a tapered bullet and a straight bullet for next year. Both are 208 grain bullets in my 22:1 alloy. I'll report back once it stops raining and I can get to the range.

When Dean Miller built my 32 MS he used a Douglas barrel.  He had Jerry Barnett (?) make his standard 205 semi-spitzer mold designed around the Douglas barrel interior dimensions.  Never really sized them.  Doc Brewer had a friend that made a swaging press like the old Mighty Mite.  He had me cast up a hundred or so at his shop, and we just picked out a dozen or so identical weight, lubed them, and then sent them to BSS.  He made a swaging die and press for me that just "uniformed" them.  At the time I could make about sixty good ones per hour.

I miss Jerry, his standard joke was "PONTIAC"; Poor Old Nebraskan Thinks It's A Cadillac.

If you could find somebody with one of Jerry's molds...  Buy a handful and get a mold made by somebody like Accurate Molds.

Good Luck!

Rich

Wonder if the throat is different on the .32-20CPA. I was seating my Mos bullets with a plugged case before I got a Weber seater.

I wouldn't be surprised if they have different throats.  I have two .32-40 CPA's and they have completely different chambers.  One has nearly no throat at all, the rifling seems to start at the case mouth with no taper, while the other one has a long taper.

I have  Hoch 200 gr. mould both  both A BS and a fixed.I'll check if theres a "D"I know they drop out at .321. Looks like the my Accurate 205 is the bullet( I see I also have a B&D in 207),though I prefer heavier for BR shooting, the lightest possible for offhand. Snow on the ground,no elk on the hillside yet.    thanks Guys
