Stuck cases .32-40

Print Post
I’m breach seating .32-40s using the same case(s) over and over. Yesterday I had two cases(well used) that had to be tapped out.  Pretty enthusiastically. I tried each a couple of times with the same result, so quit for the day. Cleaned the chamber real good and cleaned up both cases (polished). Today I took one fresh case out as well as the two “problem” cases. The fresh case did fine and the “problem” cases still stuck. Dimensions are the same. Stretching isn’t the issue as all three are 2.09~.  Now I’m suspecting that the problem cases have been fired so many times that they have lost their elasticity. In the next day or two I’ll try annealing.  Any other thoughts?

Resize the offending case and it will be OK again.

Annealing and resizing will probably fix your right up.

Even better if you don't anneal them.   Leave them "spring-y".

Yes, anneal.
I had some old 38-40 cases that wouldn't hold a crimp even when using a factory crimp die. They were too "springy". Annealed them simply by rotating their neck in the flame of a propane torch until they turned red. Used a cordless drill and an appropriately sized socket to hold the cases.

No, don't anneal. If you do, anneal the mouth of the case. Annealing should make the case stick more. Could be the case was a little oversize to begin with.
You want it to spring back which means the case needs to be hard not soft.

The bottom .200” of the case is a big problem area. Very often where brass fired in a different chamber hangs up, even after sizing. Not uncommon after multiple firings for it to get sticky there, more so if the base of the cartridge  is not well supported or a bit out of round.

Since you polished the cases you might see a rub mark, if not black it with a sharpie, chamber it and you’ll see the trouble spot when you remove it from the chamber.

I can only offer my honest and humble thanks to each of you who have responded to my issue.

As a first option, I FL resized the offending cases.  In the limited shooting I did today there were no failures to extract nor any indications of a sticky case. Although these cases have been fired literally hundreds of times without issue, I’ve recently increased my powder and suspect that increase to have been the primary causation of my extraction issues. This didn’t occur immediately upon the increase, but over some number of firings. I will monitor the number of firings before that condition next arises.

Again, my thanks.

Jim
