Stevens-Pope 44?

The good news, I found what the guy claims is a Stevens 44 1/2 with a Pope barrel. The bad news it is NOT a 1/2 it's definitely a 44. How would I know if it's a Pope barrel? Were they marked on top or just under the forearm? Oh yes it's in 22LR. Neil

Not all Pope barrels are marked on the top. Some only have the Cam markings on the bottom of the barrel with the barrel number and date with out Popes name.

Cheers,
Laurie

Indeed. My first Pope, back in 1987, was such a 44. I didn't realize what I had, and assumed the bore was badly worn. I wasn't familiar with the shallow rifling form. The guy I sold it to turned around and sold it also, even though we both found it to shoot very well. The next owner gloated to us that it was a Pope, and we didn't know it!

I have a Stevens Pope on a 44 action. I bought it from a member here this year. When Pope started at Stevens there was not a 44 -1/2 action yet.Mine is a lugged hammer 32-40.  Too bad Stevens records are not available, it would be interesting to find the history of these rifles.

And of course it should be left hand twist rifling also.

Well with not being able to inspect it in person I let it pass. It sold for what a regular 44 in that shape would sell for. If it truly was a Pope rifle someone got a heck of a deal. This working for a living sure messes up my gun auction buying  Sad
