oneatatime, I got the loupe out to look at the portrait's neck and found what looked like what might be engraver's initials is an area of surface oxidation. I was able to ask Tom Rowe about the question of whether the portrait could/would have been of the original owner. His reply, basically, was "We'll never know. It could be, or it could be a character from an old beer ad." Both barrels are 8.15 with slightly different bore dimensions. The mounted barrel has about a .26" throat and in the fluted barrel the lands come all the way to the end of the chamber. I'm assuming breech seating and/or stop rings in the octagon barrel and better success with fixed cartridges in the fluted barrel.

I have some more details on the octagon barrel dimensions at the end of the thread:      "Powder - How much or little will fit". I'll move that info here after I retake photos of the nitro proof,
Detmold and J Albrecht stamps on the barrel.
