IMR 4198 and 32-40

A friend of mine gave me a can of IMR 4198.  Anybody have any loading suggestions for the 32-40 with a 170 grain cast bullet?  This would be for an original 1885 High Wall, and also a Marlin 1893.

Thanks!

Slower than 4227.Saw a load said to start at 16 grains and work up for accuracy...no mention as to bullet weight.....

Have a look at the Lyman Cast Bullet manual, 4th edition.   Has data for several bullet weights with 4198 in the 32-40.

I love 4198, but never had good results with it in my .32-40 rifles. It's a little too slow burning for the .32-40 in my opinion. It works great in larger capacity cartridges I load it in.

When I bought a pound from a friend to try in my 30 Wesson behind a 145gr bullet cast 16/1, I was told it was too slow for that small case.  However, 15.5 gr shoots better than the other powders I tried.  Go figure.

I found that it shot well for fixed loads in .32-40, but it was awfully dirty. Unburnt grains and some smoky soot in the barrel. It would eventually go away if the load was increased, but by then the accuracy went away with the soot.
My starting info came from one of the Lyman books more or less. Can't find the book with my range notes right now.

All those unburnt granules resulted in fairly wide deviation of velocities when I shot them across my Oehler. The powder worked decent at 100 yds., but as I shot farther out it began to open up group sizes for me.
I don't see that deviation issue when I load it in larger cases, and it shoots extremely well in my various .40 calibers at very long distances.

I have found IMR 4198 to work great in larger caliber rifles, but never used it in at 32-40.  I would be interested in your results if you do use it.

I haven't had sterling results with 4198 in my .32-40's for breech seating, but I haven't completely given up on it. 4227 and AA9 remain my go-to's. I've been meaning to try 4759, but my stash of that is pretty much earmarked for use in medium-size .30's such as .30-30, .30-40, and '06 with cast bullets.

I gave 4198  A try in a pair of 32-40's and a 33-47 last month. I did not get top accuracy with any of the rifles. A friend of mine uses 4759 exclusively in his CPA 32-40 and shoots some absolutely stellar groups.

Thanks for the help! I think that this may be a path to avoid...
