Have you tried a .45-70 case in it yet George? If it doesn't fit, it's likely for the Ballard .45-65, or .45-100, both have a smaller base diameter.

Nice find.  Many years ago I found one like it but marked 38 and missing the little acorn nut on the de-capper portion.  Mine is just sort of a place holder in my collection, yours looks like a centerpiece!
