Found a Ballard at the flea market...

... or part of one. It was in a box with a bunch of shotgun receivers. I bought it simply because the price was low enough to make it an affordable paper weight. Plus I will probably never find another. Serial number appears to be 1809 or thereabouts. There are no other visible markings. Seems to be a solid action with no cracks or deep pitting.
It was at the same stall where I bought the 1896 Remington roller barreled receiver posted elsewhere. Just thought I'd put her up here for some background input.

It's a pre-marlin, they were different.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Ball & Williams, R Ball, and Dwight Chapin Ballards all used tangs like this receiver. Merrimack and Brown used the through bolt like Marlin.
Dwight Chapin had mostly round top receivers, while the others had mostly octagon top receivers.
Finding parts for any pre-Marlin Ballard is nearly impossible, so they really are paper weights with missing parts.
