Stevens 404 Armory - Looking for Information
Aug 9th, 2022 at 10:23am
Print Post
A few months back I picked up a Stevens action (with the butt stock but missing the breach block and lever pin) from a member of this forum I thought was a 44 1/2 but it turned out to be a 404.  I have found locating information and good pictures of the 404 difficult and would appreciate it if anyone here could help me out.  I'd like to put the rifle back into its original configuration (or at least as near as I can) using a CPA breech block, lever pin, barrel and semi-beavertail forearm.  Many thanks for your help.

The 404 was the Semi-Military, the 414 was the Armory. Here are 2 pics from auctions claiming to be 404 Semi-Military. only the first one matches the Stevens catalog description.

Thanks guys.  I'm currently working on bringing a 414 Armory back to life and wasn't sure if Stevens also called the 404 the same thing.  The top picture confirms my suspecion.  After looking at it, the semi-beavertail forearm from CPA looks like it could be used to shape up a fascimile of the original.  I understand the 404 had an automatic ejector.  My action is missing that feature.  However, could one be fabricated or would the action function fine without the ejector but with a CPA rimfire breech block?  Thanks again, I appreciate the help.

The 404 used a 44 1/2 action. The 414 a 44 action. Although I understand some 404"s used the 44, but have never seen one. Others here may have. Tom Rowe is in the process of putting together a Stevens book, perhaps he can shed some light. John Dutcher would also have an/the answer, and I will ask next time I speak with him.

I’m confused, do you have a 414 or a 404? Is the front of your frame or lower tang stamped with 404 or 414? The 414’s were all built on the 44 action and are much more common. The semi-military 404’s are much more scarce and were made with the 44 1/2 action, but were supposedly also made on the weaker 44 action. The 414’s had a 26” barrel, the 404’s have a 28” barrel, with a sling swivel assembly dovetailed into the bottom of the barrel ahead of the  forearm.

I have both and both are ongoing projects.  The 414 is closer to completion.   However, after I got the 404 receiver and realized what it was I decided to attempt a restoration of it too.  My 414 is a 44 receiver but it is marked 414 on the underside.  My 404 is a 44 1/2 receiver and it is marked 404 on the underside.

PS - could someone give me some dirsctions on resizing pictures?  I'll post some if I can figure it out.

That’s fantastic that you have both actions!
If you are posting from a smart phone, just take a screenshot of your pictures and that should allow you to post it. When I do this I will have the small, medium, and large options for the picture, when you select it.

It seems like every time I use my phone to log in it makes a mess out of my password and, for some reason, I don't seem to be alble to reduce my pictures down to the size this forum accepts.  Close, but as Maxwell Smart used to say; "missed it by that much Chief"

Got it figured out.  Thanks for the tip on posting photos from my phone.

The rifle on top is the 414 "restoration" project I mentioned.  I bought the barrelled receiver off GB several months ago and the forearm and barrel band were purchased from ASSRA members on this forum.  The butt stock was an eBay purchase.  It's actually a NOS Reinhart Fajen replacement but as far as I can tell it is very similar to what I have seen on 414s.

The middle receiver is the subject 404 action.  Its the action I'd like to restore back into the original "semi-military" configuration using a breach block, extractor, barrel and semi-beavertail fore stock from CPA.

The bottom rifle is a 044 1/2 project I've been working on over the last year.

My 414 has a hard rubber buttplate similar to what Stevens used on most shotguns, 311 for example.
404’s used the elk head plate same as the 044 1/2 English model I believe.
Finding a 44 1/2 .22 LR kicking ejector could be difficult, I wonder if a ejector from a 44 could be used with a bushing in the .290 hole for the lever pin, reduced down to.200”?
