udder cream on bullet noses?

I've seen elsewhere some discussion of people using Udderly Smooth hand cream on the noses of BP cartridges for fouling control, dipping them before loading.

Anybody here have thoughts or experience with this method? Does it wind up increasing breech pressures by lubing the chamber?

I just played that at full volume. My wife, sitting nearby, was looking all around trying to figure what the hell she was hearing. We get everything from raccoons to horses around here, but so far no cattle.

Well, I am udderly one of the people who uses udder hand cream on the front of the bullet.  I use it in my .577 Snider. I load 60 grains of 2F with a .600 round ball. The ball sits about a quarter inch below the case mouth. I fill the the remaining space above the ball with udder hand cream.  Works well.

When I was at Tommy's this summer I was staying with friends at Deer Park. One evening Craig and I and Lauraunna went to the store in Deer Park for something. Craig and I sat in the parking lot waiting for Lauranna's return. After a while of watching the fat women walking through the parking lot, I told Craig, you know, it wasn't that many years ago you had to go to a county or state fair to see women that fat and you had to pay to see it.  Craig laughed and I went into my cow mooing bit. I have had a habit of making cow mooing sounds when I get around really fat chicks. I've gotten so good at it I can fool my dog Buddy. He barks and runs around the house looking for the cow.

If I owned a big store like that in the city I'd have a loud speaker out front making a nice assortment of moo sounds. I'd have a button and a camera in my office and I could push the button whenever I wanted.  Smiley

Though the guns were muzzle-loaders, the bloody and pivotal 1857 mutiny of Indian soldiers is generally agreed to have been sparked by a new cartridge for their service rifles.  The paper containing the powder and bullet became rumored to be lubricated externally with pig (unclean) and cow (sacred) fat.  You were supposed to bite into those cartridges as part of loading them, which many of the largely native soldiers refused to do, citing their religious beliefs.  That the rumor was false in the end made calling the misunderstanding “tragic” completely inadequate.

So let’s move forward 10-12 years or so, and let’s suppose Britain’s reconfigured Indian Army was issued Snider cartridges with the slug lubricated in some way with udder cream.  I can too easily imagine “udder cream” being rumored into “cow fat”, creating a cartridge that would’ve been considered offensive by both shooters and those being shot at, and that a second massive “tragedy” might have ensued.

In short, empires can indeed rock if not crumble over what retrospectively seems no more important than the poetic “loss of a nail”.

Is this stuff like Bag Balm?

Reminds me of the story about a milk cow that backed into a Beech Craft with the engine running.

Talk about udder destruction...

The stuff is a grease and water emulsion, not like Bag Balm.

I might not get many technical answers beyond someone else who probably also heard about it on the Brit forum for Snider use, but nonetheless I'm enjoying all the other answers plenty

Dry humor. Wink
Normally I would just raise my watch wrist high above my head and exclaim loudly 'save the watch it is way too late to save the boots'.

All kidding aside there is a section of the NATO proof procedure for the 7.62 x 51 that lubes the chamber and then fires a test round. IIRC bolt thrust increases about 10%.

As fluid as emulsions tend to be the acceleration of the bullet should move the 'blob' affixed to the nose of the bullet into a nice ring of lube to wipe the bore. Clearly YMMV.

I gave it a try and it seemed to do just that. bore did not accumulate maningful levels of powder fouling over a dozen rounds and not a big mess to clean up either. Definitely merits further experiments.
