Darr Ballard

I won this Darr Ballard in an auction recently, 32-40 Ballard.
It looks like the lever is chrome plated.
I wonder if anyone here is familiar with this rifle, "157/8.11.75/.32-40/1:16" under forearm. So presumably job 157
The SN# dates the action to 1890, might be one of the last ones made

You outbid me and I think I dropped out too early.
Hope you find it interesting.

Rifle is number 157 built and Barry son David has all of the build information book. The year and for who it was built for and the twist is very obvious. The groove diameter should be around 320.5 and the correct bullet length for it would be 3 times the groove diameter if that might also be helpful to you.
David was shooting with his Dad at the San Diego Schuetzen group and maybe one of those folks can contact David and to get that information for you?.

I put that bid in weeks ago, I was actually hoping to get outbid because I purchased a number of  rifles recently.
One more bid and it would have been yours, sold for my max.
Looks like I'll be eating those Chinese noodles for a while. Cheesy

A Google search shows David Darr lives just North of San Diego in Oceanside, Ca. Sure it's the correct David Darr since it shows his father as Barry Darr.
Didn't see a phone number, or other info beyond address. I've recently discovered one of my Ballards has a Darr barrel also, and might see if I can get ahold of him to see if there's a record of it.
Mine was done in April of 1974, and also a .32-40, but done by reboring and rifling a Winchester barrel. I discovered test targets in some paperwork with the gun that appear to be Barry Darr's load testing on 4 targets with 4227. Targets read, "Ballard-Winchester-Darr barrel".

Rebel,

nothing wrong with a six-month diet of PBJ* for a good rifle.

Here's the email I have for him:

ddarr1497@yahoo.com

It's been several years since he came down to shoot with us, so I'm not certain that the address is still valid.

So, YMMV

Who has the records to date a Ballard by serial Number?

There never were any records kept by Marlin for Ballard rifles. Since Marlin did not own the Ballard patent, and only built Ballard rifles for SD&G, they never saw any reason to keep records. I always thought they might have felt it was SD&G's task to record the info, not theirs.
There are ways to get close to deciphering when a particular Ballard was built based on serial numbers, name stamped on the left receiver side, and features. (If it's in original configuration) Early gun pre 1881 will have the JM Marlin stamp, and later guns will have the Marlin Firearms Co. stamp. Different levers and hammers for various time periods, plus some buttplate changes.

It appears the email for David Darr might not work. Sent off an email to it last week, but no response. It didn't bounce back, just no reply, so he's either not answering, or doesn't use it anymore.
