A friend recently bought this photo on eBay. Even with a hi-res image I can't make out the hat emblems. Any ideas?

Almost looks like a GAR hat emblem?

Interesting that in nearly all the old protos nobody is over weight, now the obesity rate in the USA is somewhere in the 60% range and here in Aus it's also 40% or so.

It appears that the notice on the building is in German, so perhaps an area that has a large number of German speakers (not especially helpful back then, however).

It's also possible that Ken is right - i.e., a GAR post with a shooting group.

These uniforms are fairly typical for the various Schuetzen organizations. I think they were probably CW surplus or tailors that had been making them were happy for some orders. The hat on the guy in the front row is barely legible and I think I can see UMS(?) C (?). The last two letters are tough to decipher. Sure wish folks would write on the back names, dates and places (hint, hint). I do see some full fledged masculine figures. Lots of cigars and damn few smiles. Interesting group, odd that the rifles were Winchester Lo-walls.

Tom, some of the faces look vaguely familiar. The round-faced guy standing on the left and the guy with the big sideburns both look familiar. Maybe we can match them with other photos.

Tom, I once had a medal with that wreath as the top and in it was  DASG  deutsche amerikausche schutzen gesellschaft. I may have butchered it from memory. On line some place is a picture of their headquarters building in New York city.Clubs around the country were affiliated with them.
This is my dimes worth.

Tom Good to hear from you—long time. I have a photo of the building—it is now a book store, located on St. Mark's square. I know the sign is in German but remember at that time there were more Germans in the US than any other group and some schools were even teaching their students in German, most big towns had a German paper etc. I don't have a good clue where this club was.

Perhaps it's because my mental facilities are rapidly aging, but I don't understamd Rich's comment.

Ah, OTony, had Rich's comment not been addressed to me, I might have caught what you did.

I barely recalled Mick’s post, had to scroll up to decipher Rich’s comment!

There are a few guys in there who are packing some extra pounds.  However I read years ago that back in the days when there were logging camps with cook houses that the average daily consumption of food amounted to 8000 calories!  And I don’t think there were too many over weight loggers back then.
