Large Rifle Primers vs Large Magnum Rifle Primers

If I am reloading 38-55, 45-70 and 45-120 with black powder does it matter which one of these Large Rifle Primers OR Large Magnum Rifle Primers I use?

Thanks Retreever

The military uses black powder for an igniter in munitions simply because it ignites easily.
Being an experimentalist I think I'd add pistol primers to the mix.
Until you try it you won't know, and if it makes   no difference then you can relax and just  shoot.

The 38 and the 45-70 may very well get along better with large pistol primers. The 120 probably do alright them as well, but regular large rifle primers should work, magnum primers need not apply.

In both my 40-60 and 40-65 I have tried both large pistol and large rifle primers using only BP. The end result was that "MY RIFLE" seemed to prefer either Federal 155 LMP seated through paper, or, CCI BR2 LR primers. YMMV.

I've never quite figured it out, but the marge rifle magnum primers give a lower velocity than standard large rifle primers.  Atleasy in my 45-70 and 56-50 Spencer rounds.   The magnums don't seem to burn any cleaner either in my experience.   But, I'll use they all up.   Accuracy is about the same.

Venturino and Garbe's BPCR reloading primer of years ago advised the use of Large Rifle Magnum primers--despite the fact that the commercial and miitary BP loaded ammunition from the 19th century used the small rifle primers. It was only with the advent of smokeless powder about 1895 that shooters started complaining about the difficulty in obtaining satisfactory ignition using the then standard small rifle primers--so out they came with the large rifle primers.  I have had no trouble setting off BP in 357 44-40 38-55 40-70ss and 45/70 with large pistol primers

Keep in mind that LPPs are slightly smaller in height than LRPs. I've had some FTFs with them when using in place of LRPs. SPP and SRPs I've interchanged freely without issues as they are the same dimensions.
Have always used LRPs with BP loads but not often. However, when using smokeless powders in the larger old BP cartridges as 45-70, 45-120, 50-70, and even the 38-55, I notice slightly better groups when using magnum LRPs. I thinks they give more consistent burns in those big, partially empty, cases. This was without using any wadding or fillers.
The Winchester magnum LRPs are harder than standard LRPs. I had a whole batch of FTFs when trying them in my modern made Miroku 1886 Winchester with the rebounding hammer. But they all went bang in my original 1885 hi wall.

I have 10 old UMC 38-40 cases that use the SRPs. The are also the folded head type. All the newer 38-40s I have are solid head with LRPs pockets.

I did have some FTF issues when using LP primers owing to the fact that they are slightly shorter, seating them through paper cured the issue completely.

Mike,
I'm not familiar with seating through paper. Does this add a paper shim in the primer pocket... or something else?

I simply cut 1/2" lengths of writing paper about 1/4" wide, I put one into my Lee capper on top of the case holder and seat the primer through the paper into the case, works a treat, no more misfires. I don't need to do this with LR primers, they work just fine.

I've shot 1000's upon 1000's LP in LR primer pockets and NEVER had a misfire for light primer strike due to length.

I use the paper from ASSRA targets for my punched primer wads.  Cut 1/4” strips with a paper cutter, insert along that little groove in the bottom of the RCBS shell holder, put pistol primer on priming stake, operate lever.  Tear the cutaway part off the end of the strip and repeat.

Or you can cut an exit slit in the back of the shell holder to push the cutout strips on through.

The paper is thick enough to take up just enough ullage in the primer pocket so the primers seat flush.  For me, anyway, it attenuates the primer flash for milder black powder ignition.  I always get better groups this way (or with rifle primers and a newsprint circle dropped into the case).

The usual two-bullseye 100-yd target will supply enough strips to last a couple years.  Of course, you have to avoid the bullet holes, but they’re all in the 25-ring anyway,  Cheesy so no big problem.

Me too. Guessing 12-14,000 in one rifle.  An unmentioned benefit is that if you don't clean the primer pockets, a build-up in the bottom of the pockets causes the LP's to fit just right.
