	I've never heard of the .38-30 Extra Long either, but suspect it may be another name for the .38 Extra Long. The latter cartridge certainly existed, at least as a rimfire (I've seen sealed boxes). The .38 Short and .38 Long could and were used in rifles and pistols. But with a case that's just a smidgen under 1.5" in length, the .38 Extra Long was a rifle cartridge only back in the day. Roberson Cartridge makes reloadable cases for all three .38 RF versions, if you can accept spending $3-$5 per case. Bill Lawrence

	The .38 Ballard Extra Long most certainly exists, but I've never heard of the .38-30 Ex. Long? I'm not sure what the BP charge was for the Ballard version, so maybe it was around 30 grs. and someone hung that name on it?

Not sure where you got the ".38-30" thing as it's stated in the auction it's a .38 Extra Long, and the picture of the caliber marking shows it to be a .38 Ex Long too? It does say it's a "custom" and uses .357 Maximum brass which is what I'd expect donor brass to be for the .38 Ballard Extra Long. It's a pretty nicely done #1 1/2 and I think a great rifle if it stays under around $2100 or so. The #1 1/2 are always tough to find in anything but rimfire and considering what it would cost to build this rifle it could be a bargain.

	That Remington 1 1/2 was listed on gunbroker a couple of months ago, I am surprised that no one has bid on it.

	Sorry if this information is obvious to many of you, but I knew nothing about this cartridge, so I asked the seller where I could get more information about it. His response: "CARTRIDGES OF THE WORLD. but this being a modern rendition, its the same as 357 Max."

It's not the same as .357 Maximum, and the seller shouldn't say that as this action is not nearly strong enough to ever consider shooting .357 Maximum factory ammo in it. The .357 Max. is a 1.59" long case, and the .38 Ex. Long is a 1.63" long case. The .357 Max uses a .357" bullet, where the .38 Ex. Long uses a heeled bullet that fits a similar case, but bores are around .375" groove diameter. I would assume if his rifle is chambered for the .357 Max that it's also got a smaller .357" groove barrel to shoot the smaller bullets accurately.
