I went and found some 748 powder on my shelf. 3 unopened plastic pound containers and one open Metal can, what was in the metal can is very fine grained ball powder and dark black. Almost as dark ad black powder.  I didn't break the seal on any of the plastic bottles as they were intact and wanted to keep them that way.

And FWIW, the seals come off on at least 1/3 cans I open.

Great powder!  I used it in a 225 Winchester.  Would consistently shoot groups the size of my pinkie fingernail @ 100 yds.

I use it to shoot gas check cast lead bullets in my .416 Taylor. 1750 fps shoots very well. Tighter groups than either 4320 or 3031.
Add the blessing of jacketed bullets at 2150 fps shooting into less than 2 inches of the combined groups at 100 yards, makes a great combination.

I have been reloading for over 50 years, in that time I have no experience with ball powder, so I have some questions. I wish to use it in a 9.5x57, there is no load data that I can find for WW748 or BL-C(2). I have in the past worked up loads using data from a listed cartridge with close ballistics. My plan was to use data from 358 Winchester, 220gr bullet. Now I worry about reduced loads using ball powder. How much reduced does it become a problem?
My plan was to start with 44gr 748 & 235gr Speer & Remington 9 1/2 primers, does this sound reasonable & safe starting point? I would use H4895 if I could find any close by. I do have over a pound of 3031. Any help is appreciated.
