4198 has been my go to for this cartridge, and many other large capacity hyphenated cartridges for years. Running loads through my ballistic program shows 4198 to have a nice gentle pressure rise, and maximum pressures lower than BP has.
My load of 22 grs. of 4198 with a 400 gr. bullet is under 12,000 psi. and very accurate.

I'm having great results with 22.0 grs of reloader 7 with a NOE 412400 400gr. I haven't chronoe'd it yet but its a very accurate and mild recoiling load.

27 gns 2207 ( 4198).  380 gn Brooks 2 dia.  Fixed .Swede Roller 4 went .75”  5 th took it to 1” up there but no signs of pressure. Beats cleaning BP which by the way is like Rocking H. poo here in OZ.

          Cheers Mal.

When you guys say 4198, do you mean H-4198 or IMR-4198?

thanks,

Chris.

Unless you're pushing max loads I use either with the same charges. I think most of mine is IMR currently.

This thread was very timely.  I have been looking for alternative 40-65 loads due to the limited supply of various powder types.
I had some IMR 4189 and decided to try the 22 gr. load with some 330 gr. slugs.  I didn't have any 400 gr. cast so the lighter ones were used. Primers were Fed 210M.
The rifle was a Cody Ballard; 32", Douglas, 1:16 twist.  Peep sights.
We were sighting at a regulation ram at 500 yds. for a target. All the hits were very consistent.  For ten shots, the average velocity was 1,310 FPS. The SD was 27.5.
I had five more loaded the same, but with a 1.25"X1.25" square of very thin TP pushed over the powder.  This gave an average velocity of 1404 FPS with an SD of 6.6.
While this was a very limited sampling, the results were very encouraging.  I use the 330 gr. slug often as it has no difficulty knocking over rams at 500M and offers a slight reprieve to my aging shoulder.
I'll try some lighter powder loads and try to get the velocities down closer to 1250-1300 FPS.  The TP seemed to make a difference and will merit further use.
BTW, the 4198 has given very good results in 38-55 loadings.
Mike.

I have found 22 grains od 5744 with a 1 grain Dacron tuft to hold the powder in place under a 400 grain Money bullet very accurate in my Browning BPCR
40-65 16 twist.

I was thinking about using 5744 in my Hepburn that is now a .40/70 Sharps Straight.  But I would be afraid to use that Dacron tuft.  Too many 5744 stories with less-than-fine results.

I wrestled with the Dacron issue too, but satisfied myself that done correctly works really well. Through research and  testing found better chronograph numbers and accuracy. I know there have been instances with this powder but it's hard to know how people have treated fillers in their loading process.
Also have read of issues without fillers and have seriously wondered if it's not a flash over or secondary detonation issue.
Granted I have only used it in the Browning BPCR for testing and a few gong shoots.
