38-55 Smokeless Heavy Bullet Load

I have a 38-55 Ballard and Winchester with a 15 inch twist and I'd like to try some 330 grain bullets in it. I can't find any loading data for the 38-55 other than 250 to 260 grain bullets. I plan on using 4198 or Reloader 7. Do any of you have a good idea where I should start? I plan on shooting around 14 to 1500 ft per second. Thanks

There are loads for what you're looking for in the Lyman Reloading Handbook.

Here's some load data from my CPA 38-55, 30" barrel.

Cases: Starline 2.125"
Primer:  RP 9 1/2
Powder: IMR4198
Bullet: BACO JIM377325C2, 325 Gr .377 dia
Alloy:  Wheel weights with 2% tin added
Lube:  SPG

Charge        Velocity         Extreme Spread
18.5 gr        1291 fps       72 fps
20.5 gr        1437 fps       69 fps
22.0 gr        1504 fps       37 fps

The bullets were seated out to firmly engage the rifling.

The best groups were around an inch at 100 yards with a 6X scope.

Mike

Not sure if this might somehow be helpful and all of the load data is on the bottom of this 200yd. Target.

I see a modern Nightforce 12x42 scope was used to shoot the "practice  target"
I simply just do not believe they were a part of the intent of the ASSRA and the ISSA's mission statements but that is just a personal opinion.
But I also have no qualms about anyone using them and I have never felt that they also have an unfair advantage.

I did use a Night Force for awhile and it is one of the best scopes that I have owned. Also used a sled quite abit as I had some pretty high goals that I had set for myself back then. I have long since returned to a 11/2 20X Unertl and a sand bag front rest.

18 grains of 4198 is what I use under a 330 grain bullet in 38-55

My post was a copied quote from JLewis regarding his opinion about a CPA BR stock i asked questions about recently.
I found it funny he has no qualms about modern  scopes and stuff on his guns but others using stocks he doesn't agree with are well...not with the (his) intention of the sport.
Here is his post.

Thanks to those who gave me data to go by. I'm starting out with 21 grains of 4198 and heading to the range tomorrow. Got to laugh though about how a thread asking about powder charges, ends up morphing into something else.

I have been using Reloader 7 for very good, accurate loads in the 38-55s. It is very close to 4198 in burning rate.
