What size lead bullets to order?

I slugged the bbl of my Winchester 1885 32-40 and the slug measured .3215.  I am thinking or ordering .323 lead bullets.
What are your recommendations?
Thanks

I recommend bullets of 1:20 alloy (tin:lead) if you can find them. Either diameter of .322 or 323 should work depending bullet profile and lead of your barrel just ahead of the chamber. Bullets of .322 will be easier to breech seat but either should shoot well if you are going to shoot fixed ammunition.
Bullet lube makes a difference depending on if you will be shooting black or smokeless loads.
Best of luck to you and please keep us informed of your progress.

I am looking at Montana Bullet Works, 165 gr. RNFP with a BHN of 15.  I will be using smokeless powder.

I'm not sure how BHN 15 equates to 1:20 but guess it's harder. I'd go for the .322 as it's only a half thou larger than your groove diameter. That's enough to ensure bore is sealed so you won't get any powder gas blow-by.
Do you plan to shoot fixed or breech seated?

I am shooting fixed reloads.

I just found some info.
BNH 15 is 5% tin, 5% antimony, 90% lead.
BNH 10 is 5% tin, 95% lead.
I do not cast so I am not sure what this all means!

If you happen to have some chamber casting material on hand.
I would recommend doing a chamber casting and to send it too who is ever going to make you mould.
I would also tell them what your own specific use would be and also the alloy or even better yet some of the bullets from who you are buying them from and that you are also wanting to use.
And also your barrels twist rate

With fixed ammo .322 or .323 should be fine to have fun.
Don't overcomplicate  it.

Chief, if you look again, that mix that was 95/5 percent is close enough to the 20/1 that we all talk about. If you can get some .322 bullets in that you are truly good to go.
For what it's worth, though, I have been shooting the same Winchester highwall for nearly forty years and it shoots wheelweight bullets fixed pretty doggone well. Not as good as softer breech seated ones, but pretty well. I did check the hardness once and it was at bhn 12, it I recall. Good luck.

Thank you all for your input.  Along with the PM's I received the consensus is to go 2-3 thousands larger than my measurement.
I ordered 100 to give them a try.
Thanks

Chief.

Before you order your bullets. You have a chamber cast, measure the chamber dimensions at the neck and do a little math measuring the brass neck wall thickness to make sure that the 2-3 thousands oversized bullet will chamber with the case mouth expanded to except that bullet and being able to chamber the shell with out having to resize the bullet again so it will chamber the round.

A bullet to large in diameter pushed too fast with smokeless powder you might end up with what you see in the photo.
Your looking at unfired and fired bullets I recovered from a snow pile. I wanted to see what was going on with my accuracy.

Lead Pot I do not have the material to do a chamber cast.
I tried reloading A Hornady jacketed bullet that measured .3215 without resizing the once fired case.  I wanted to save on my brass by not resizing after each shot, 32-40 brass is difficult to come by.  it was loose in the neck.  So I believe I have enough room.  In fact I may have to go back to not resizing the case to seat the .323 lead bullets, the .3215 jacketed bullets seated very nicely but the .323 bullets may be a tight squeeze in a resized case.

Well I got the lead bullets and they were a thousandths to large at .234.  loaded 6 with 16 gr. of 5744 and the accuracy was awful. All to the right about 12-14 inches. I am cleaning the bbl now, with no leading so far.
Back to square one, with an order for .232 bullets!  You would not think a couple of thousandths would affect accuracy like that.  The jacketed 170gr. Hornady  shot well for me.

I would never go 2-3 thousandths over groove diameter. The 323" would have been my choice for the groove diameter you got when slugging the bore.
Going too far over groove size results in fins on the base band, which can have an  adverse affect on the bullet after it leaves the bore.
